N4: Some serious help needed

Greetings:

Here is the deal.  I can get N4 to run, and once I start to race, the games
bombs back to Windows.  The framerate averages 8-12 usually.  The same thing
happens in GPL - once you start to race, the games bombs out.  Any
suggestions?  Do not know if I need to upgrade my system, but I think i have
enough to get it to work.

Here is what I'm using:

PIII-500
256mb RAM
Microsoft Sidewinder Wheel
Windows 98, second edition
NVIDIA TNT 64 32mb ram card
TBS Montego II sound card

do I need to run in GL or 3d?

get the D3D patch from papy.com  and READ the readme file.  It has a
few changes that will need to be made in your core.ini

Okay, what do you have running in the background?  Screen saver?  Energy
management program?  Virus detector?  Lotta other stuff?

Dell Computer? Try disabling DirectSound hardware acceleration in the
A3D (or Turtle Beach) applet in the Control Panel. Dell Drivers do
this with GPL, not sure about N4 though.
