I have to disagree a bit. On my both machines (P200 and now PIII450) I
had GP2 setup so that the occupancy was always below 100% which kept a
consistent framerate. Only when things got realy hairy did the occupancy
suffer.

It is annoying that the laptimes were lower, but this did compensate for
the effect that there is less control when a framerate is low, so it
gave you a better (more realistic ?) chance. But it is something that
kills multiplayer. Which, in an internet form, will not be included
(perhaps for this reason?).

Greg I agree with everything you say....

But...on my brothers AMD Machine (450MHz, 128Meg, Voodoo 3, SB 128) it is
impossible to play, even on the lowest setting (in which it looks like
Chequered Flag for the Speccy! - Who remembers that one??).

I think that it has been tailored towards intel...probably as these were the
development machines.  Its quite depressing as we cant have a decent network
race.

| It is fine with a P2 and a 12MB Voodoo2 card.

F1 2000 should i buy it?

Thanks for filling in the gaps - it was never intended (& this was hopefully
clear) to be a definitive answer to the posters question.

For sure F1-2000 is the best modern day sim. However, with recent advances
in rally and motorbike sims I had hoped the next racing sim would be a major
advancement over previous racing sims. We haven't had an open wheel for some
time so expectations were high. Hence my comments on graphics, sound &
physics.

I think it is a tough call - there are a number here that love it - others
that don't. I guess the best advice is try it - if it runs well on your
system and you like - keep it. Otherwise return it.

Without trying it & giving it some effort you may be missing out on a fun
experience.

As for the sound - yes I have been to Grand Prix. The sound is amazing -
fierce, raucous, incredibly loud. The multiple downshifts were like
fireworks exploding. Definately not conveyed in the external views in the
replays (which I think is the poorest implementation due to weak sounds &
stepped frequency changes). What I have not done is to ride in an F1 car
with a helmet on to sample the sounds (I wish!).

See my other post on F1 sim sound for my theory on sound :)

Cheers

Hmmm. not the best line I have ever posted on RAS, probably won't be the
worst though :)

I does mean I WILL drop GPL if something better comes along.

Ideally I would like a good selection of auto sims

Modern F1 racing
Champ car
Rally car
Historical
Touring car
Single make
Road car sims
Car chase sims
etc.

Currently there is huge variance of quality which tends to make me favour
one particular sim at this time. Hopefully this will change and the desire
for a selection of similar quality sims will be realised.

I do expect 2000 releases to be significantly better than 1998. This is what
we are used to. I don't want to stop at a 1998 sim!

There is a bug with the v1.23 Guillemot drivers. If you revert to the
drivers that came on the Ferrari CD then everything is fine!

So you have already tried the network part of F1 2000 and found
it to work well?

major

Well I don't know anything about those other sims. I am mainly a
modern F1 type of person. I also like SCGT (even though the
driving model is terrible the game is fun) and N3 for online play with
a friend. So I am comparing to other modern era F1 sims.
I totally expected any EA racing sim to be really horrible like
Nascar Revolution... F1 2000 is quite different and pertty
much the real deal IMHO. Shocking!

I haven't been to one I have just "trusted" what other who have
gone have said. I have been to a CART race and have great
tickets to the innaugreal US GP at indy, so I will eventually
find out myself :-)

Just buy it at EB. I know a fe people who picked up this game, and
were glad to have bought it at a store where they could return it
(their complaints were poor quality graphics, poor frame-rate, and
badly done tracks).

All of which are bogus IMHO :-) But there is another great reason to
buy from EB. I bought it for $29 a few days ago. I went to Best Buy
and saw F1 2000 for $39.99.

Greg,

How did you get out of that message that he said GP3 will be better?
Re-read both messages closely.

I saw two answers from GraDee, one for each question the original poster
asked.

Is it just me, or are there too many posts, recently, where someone reads
too much into a post and responds inappropriately?  I rarely post messages
(mostly try to grab pertinent information for my viewing pleasure) but this
type of knee-jerk response to a perfectly legitimate post has been really
bugging me lately.  Maybe everyone can tone down their passions just a
little bit and be thankful for all the great driving sims/games we have to
drive/play with... ;-)

Sorry to be picking on just you Greg, as several others have been guilty of
the same thing, but I just couldn't take it anymore!

I feel better now... and again, sorry Greg... :-)

I find satisfaction at no F1 title at the moment, actually.

Maybe someday?  Some of them are darn close to being satisfying to my eyes,
but have those little nitpicks (such as the poor track accuracy in F12k)
that spoils everything for me.  My taste can vary with ages.  RC2k has lived
past the hype and with the CFG file I can accurately model myself my
impression of Rally Racing like -I- want and -I- feel is the most realistic
possible.

Nope, and I don't feel it's a problem for me.  Quite like I feel it's not a
problem for F1 2000 either.  Or variable weather in RC2k.  Or better weather
in Papyrus Stock-car software.  It's not an essential problem for me, just
an added bonus.  Now for track accuracy... that's another thing 8)

Some do it better than others.  I've said it often, but some user-created
tracks for GP2 are the best you can find out there.
