*TNT or Voodoo?????????????

by Cane » Tue, 06 Apr 1999 04:00:00

Which card should I go for?
I am building a new system, a PII 400, 128mb ram etc etc.

Up until now I have used a Voodoo 1, then the Banshee, but I'm not one to be
tied down by brand loyalty.
So, is the TNT's quality really that much higher than a V2 or a V3?

Thanks for the help

Rather more depends on what games you want to play & what hardware they
support. GPL for example supports 3DFX & Rendition but only sort of supports
OpenGL (TNT) - so if that was your prime area of interest then spend your
money on 3dfx....

David, can't respond on Voodoo 3 but since I got my TNT I never
use my Voodoo 2 unless I have to! If you compare it under SBK, there
is no comparison. TNT hands down for picture quality, Voodoo looks
washed out in comparison. TNT2 may be better yet but I don't have
one of those yet either. Might be worth waiting a few weeks till the
latest offerings are out.

The vast majority of new games will support one or both of the "universal" API's
Direct3D or OpenGL. I do not think you should base your decision on old games,
even though I realize GPL is here too stay for a while. You might find a V3 to
be your first choice anyway of course, but I don't think so.

Simple. If you want BOTH D3D and 3DFX (Glide) support you only have
one choice and that is the new STB 3xxx series ( 3500 at $145.00 would
be my choice). If you feel you can live with D3D only, then one of the
new TNT2 cards would be a good choice. Both of these also have some
form of Open GL support, though I wouldn't choose either based on
that.

Well, there's the STB 2000, which is the base model of the new Voodoo3 series.

And where have you seen a price of $145 for the 3500?  Checking pricewatch,
the cheapest price on the 3500 is $208.  The best price on the *3000* is $145.

Also, apparently STB/3dfx has had trouble with the yields of the top chip and
conversely done well on the yield of the cheapest.  End result: the difference
in speed isn't that great: 183, 166, 143 MHz for 3500, 3000, 2000
respectively.  If TV-out (or some other features the expensive ones *might*
have) is not important, I'd say the base model would do nicely.

Last, they aren't out yet, right?  Then again, neither is the TNT2?  I'd wait
a bit and get one of the new V3's, *IF* Glide is important to you.  Even at
this late date, I still would not be without it.  The death of Glide is (for
good or bad) greatly exagerated.

I think I'm going to go for a TNT2 card, along with a Voodoo2 pass through
card.

There is a marked quality difference and this will only be emphasisse more with
newer games. Even the V3's I have looked at lack the contrast I get from my TNT.
Now, if only the drivers could be a bit better......

Sorry, your correct. its the 3000 that had a price of $145.00 at
Harmony Computers when I last looked.

If you REALLY want to kick ass get a new TNT2 AND find a used V2 (or
2!) card(s) to add to it. I would imagine with the V3s arrival and the
fanatics (yes, add me) on this and the flight-sim group there will be
an abundance of V2s coming up for sale soon. I have a 450 (running at
504) w/2 SLI'd V2s now and am looking to the TNT2 to replace my Matrox
G200. Will give me max performance in D3D and near max in Glide, even
compared to the V3..

BTW, anyone want an AGP 8meg Matrox G200? $50.00 shipped anywhere in
the US. Extremely fast 2D, mediocre 3D (being generous)..
