TNT & Voodoo II combo for $50!

by Jay » Sun, 09 May 1999 04:00:00

Hi, I'm looking for a little advice on a TNT voodoo II combo with regards to
racing sims....

A buddy of mine is looking to dump his voodoo II (STB 12 meg) for a voodoo
III

I'm currently running a TNT card and am considering picking up his old
voodoo II for around $50. then I'll be able to take advantage of glide only
games and the N2 3dfx Patch (if I can still find it somewhere on the web?).

Can anyone with a similar combo (TNT and single Voodoo II) tell me how they
like it? Everything I've read states that a single TNT will out-preform a
single voodoo II, so I'm wondering if I should waste my time/money/PCI
slot....

However for only $50 I'm tempted to take him up on his offer, also anyone
have an idea as to how much a new Voodoo II goes for these days?

Thanks for the advice!

A new one is $100, and I've seen used SLI combos going for $100-$150, so $50
is quite reasonable.  I'd say get it, then you're covered for any games that
run better (or only) in Glide.

Rumor has it the Electronics Boutique chain has a Best Data V2 for $99 plus a
$30 rebate.  Mail order prices bottom out around high 80's.   EBay bid prices on
single cards have not been better than this - don't know about SLI.

The combo works great. You are right in that the TNT does outperform the
Voodoo-2 in openGl and d3d. But the V-2 is nice to have around for those
Glide-only apps. In N2 I have found that the TNT is a good deal faster than
the V-2. In my P2-400 I run pause-free with max details on and all the cars
turned on, even in the mirror. Haven't really checked the fps, but if it is
smooth it is definitely over 25fps at a minimum. At the night Bristol I turn
off some of the cars, for some reason that track at night is a real frame
rate cruncher.
