GPL: Demo is poorly optimized

GPL: Demo is poorly optimized

by Toni Lassi » Wed, 08 Apr 1998 04:00:00

I tested the GPL demo with anticipation, just to be gravely
dissapointed. With my P120/32MB/Monster3D even with all the details
removed it runs maybe 5 fps. This seems like really sloppy
optimization, since the slowness is positively not with the graphics,
and there aren't even other cars on the track.

When are we getting a better optimized demo for those people who don't
have a P2/330 machine with gazillion megs of RAM? I know my specs are
somewhat under the requirements, but a machine that can run other
racing-sims fine with full detail shouldn't be so slow.

Um... are you sure you're running the 3Dfx version?

5fps seems awfully slow. How are you getting the frame rate counter? What
are the other racing "sims" that you can run full detail on a P120 and have
them run fine? And what is fine - 15fps, 20fps, 30fps, etc.
There are only a couple racing sims that I know of that will run fine for
me(25-30fps and full detail) on my P166, 64mb, Intergraph Intense 3D100,
Pure 3D(3DFX) setup. Rendition Indycar 2, Nascar 2, and Ubisoft F1 Racing.
And these titles really push the limits of my machine.

I agree with you. I have P-150-32 megs and a Monster 3D, I am only getting
somewhere around 10 fps with full details.

I am running on an 32Mb P166 with Righteous 3D and it super smooth...

HELP!  Same problem here except I have a P133/32MB RAM/Sierra Screamin' 3D
(V1000).  The framerate in CPR BLOWS THE "DOORS" OFF the framerate I'm getting
in GPL even with all the graphical options off.  I'm getting 5 or less fps in
GPL too.  Please help.  Thanks.

God bless,

P133 with 32MB and Rendition, all but cars turned off in mirrors, sky
off, some trackside stuff turned off = very decent frame rate (I'd guess
mid-upper ***s at least).  Surely won't be the case when cars are added
to the mix, but its fine to get practiced up on, for when I get a new
system and GPL this summer.

I would think that there might be something wrong with your
system, instead of the demo...One of my systems is a P150,
o/c to 166 w/32Mb, and the sim runs great in either 3Dfx or
Rendition.  Try increasing your bus_speed (from 60 to 66).
It might make a difference.

BTW, the guy with the 120 can easily o/c his chip to 133.  =)

Cheers!

You guys that are complaining about slow frame rates. Is it possible that
you are running on a packard bell  or other substandard machine with no
external cache? Or even more likely, your computer is not optimized so
great. Maybe if you don't get all that deep with your own system, you should
have a buddy come over and straighten it out somewhat. You should be able to
get better framerates than 5 even with a P120 (w/3dfx)

this isn't meant to be a flame towards anyone, just a suggestion to those
non geeks who don't push the limits of their own machine for fear and
non-knowledge of all the effects.  ie -  overclocking , etc.

How do you know the demo is poorly optimized?  "Why, because it
doesn't run well on your machine."  What utter crap. That is no basis
to conclude that the demo is poorly optimized. Without knowing what
the demo is supposed to do and without having access to the source
code I would think it impossible to say if the demo is poorly
optimized.

My point: Just because GPL runs "slowly" on your machine, ( or for
that matter, any machine) does not mean the engineers did a sloppy
job.  Man, I had shit like this. Everytime a new sim is released I
hear it. (I guess I just need to just take a deep breath - sorry
everyone.)

Very strange. I'm starting to think it's the new drivers for
Monster3D, I better try some other ones.

I have exactly the same configuration as you - P120, 32mb, Monster 3dfx
Voodoo1, and exactly the same problem - very low framerate (like 5 fps with
graphics worse than in ICR2).

But I noticed that there is no difference in framerate level if I go with
full details or with no details at all... I tried to switch to "Software"
and then back to "3dfx" - no difference in framerate. Looks like my 3dfx
card doesn't want to work in the game... :)  (though, F1RS runs great on my
system..).

Also I noticed that sometimes in the replay mode graphics suddenly runs
smoothly ! But next time it's slow again... That happens in the replay, but
never in the***pit...
