a. to be a client to an on-line race only requires about 20k of
bandwidth.
b. V.90 spec modems tend to carry on side conversations between
themselves over line quality, optimum speed, etc. and will, on
occasion stop what they're doing (sending/receiving your data) to
"retrain" with one another to optimize the connection. A little data
error isn't a huge deal to GPL, but long lapses without *any* data are
just death when you're racing on-line!
So, it's better to have just as simple a connection as possible for
online GPL racing. All the extra bandwidth of the modern 56k modem is
unnecessary and the technology that implements it causes problems of
it's own.
