GPL Online/VROC - Modem Speed?

by Andy Garto » Wed, 02 Aug 2000 04:00:00

Hi all,

I've read in a couple of places that GPL online works better
if you actually *reduce* the speed of a 56k analogue modem down
to 33k. Is this true? If so, why does it help?

Thanks,
Andy

In a nutshell, I believe it makes the connection more stable,
hencethereforthwith making the other racers appear more stable on the
circuit. Sure works for me!

I do belive I just made up 'hencethereforthwith' :P

Actually 26800 works best for me.

a. to be a client to an on-line race only requires about 20k of
bandwidth.

b. V.90 spec modems tend to carry on side conversations between
themselves over line quality, optimum speed, etc. and will, on
occasion stop what they're doing (sending/receiving your data) to
"retrain" with one another to optimize the connection.  A little data
error isn't a huge deal to GPL, but long lapses without *any* data are
just death when you're racing on-line!

So, it's better to have just as simple a connection as possible for
online GPL racing.  All the extra bandwidth of the modern 56k modem is
unnecessary and the technology that implements it causes problems of
it's own.

It all comes down to slower = more stable.

Using 56k over a poor phone line can cause more packet resends and/or
re-training of the modem to a slower speed.

Jason.

Excellent answer.  In short, the slower connection is more
"robust", leading to less data loss and fewer disconnections.

Also, many people advise to turn off Data Compression and Error
Correction (they just add unneeded overhead to the connection).  I've
done this, but I was having trouble with getting the VROC race list to
come up or "chat lag".  I turned Error Correction back on and fixed
the problem (now I can consistently get a rcae list within 30 seconds
or so of starting VROC).  BTW, I set my modem to 21,600 bps and can
get a quality rating of 980 or higher with most servers.

"But in a way, fear is a big part of racing, because if there was
nothing to be frightened of, and no limit, any fool could get into
a motor car and racing would not exist as a sport." -- Jim Clark
