Minimum Modem Speed for On-Line GPL?

Whats the lowest speed modem people use for on-line racing in
GPL succesfully?

I have been asuming that the reason my ping is so bad is because
I am at the bottom end of Africa.  I read about on-line races
between people in Australia and Europe or America and I am now
wondering if it is maybe something to do with the fact that I
only have a 28.8.

How much data is being transferred during an on-line race?  I
had some reasonable on-line DTR races, which presumably need
less transfer of data.

I would like to try some on-line racing, any opinions would be
appreciated.

Chris

AIUI, a 28k modem *can* be used successfully for GPL, although a 56k
"underclocked" (as it were) is probably better. You really need a
"real" modem, ie one that has its own on-board resources and doesn't
take them from Windows. Externals seem to be better, but there's a lot
of variation. USB modems have mixed results, but are generally good.

A great deal depends on your phone company and line. I can't play
online at all because British Telecom seem to be unable to supply a
stable connection (personal best before disconnect: 8 seconds).

You need to turn *off* data compression and error checking - they just
get in the way.

HTH.

Chris,

If you are simple driving and not hosting then 26400 is really all you
need.  It supplies the necessary bandwidth and doesn't overburden your
CPU servicing all the extra interrupts that a faster rate would.

I seem to do OK with a normal connection speed of 21600.
