ANYONE able to host w/o N3 crashing in practice?

by Hitch-Hike » Fri, 01 Oct 1999 04:00:00

Is there anyone out there that is able to Host online races that is NOT
getting kicked out to windows while sitting at practice waiting for
others to join the race?   (I know its a run on sentence, but I'm MAD!)
Doesn't seem to mater if 4 are connected or 29 are connected.  BANG,
straight to windows with now warning?

HH,

I do believe there are quite a few of us, myself being one.  Are you hosting
on WON or at your IP?  I'm not sure about WON-- I don't go there often-- but
when I'm hosting at my IP I haven't had one problem.

Hosted a beauty tonite, no problems.  BUT, I tried three times to host with
the "Computer Opponents" box un-checked and locked up every time.  I mean
solid, have-to-hit-the-reset-button lock-ups.  I think someone already
posted that you have to have at least one AI car in there or you're
screwed.  Hope this helps.

I hosted tonight... well... I tried to.

I used the "one AI minimum" theory, but it didn't work for me.  It was a
couple of minutes into practice, racers were joining, and .... total lock
up.

I hope Papy gets the N3 multiplay more stable very soon!!

I hosted about six or so races tonight, with no lockups at all. But, we
never went into practice mode. We just went straight to the track. No AI
cars either, and no problems at all.

I've been able to host with no problems but there have been a few times when
I've tried to join and got booted to desktop.

Totally false.  This is just another case of something happening to someone
and then that someone just saying that because it happens to him it must
happen to everyone.  I host periodically with no AI cars and I've gone an
hour of practice and then qualification then race-- no problems.  The whole
process of online racing is very touchy and actually anyone who joins your
hosted race can***things up.  But I doubt it has a thing to do with
using AI racers.

Well, that "someone" was me, and at the time I said it, it looked as if
it was caused by the lack of AI in the race.  I later recanted after it
failed yet again even with AI in the race.

I never once said that it would happen to everyone, and in fact never
hinted that was the case.

Papy is working on a patch, and I hope we don't have to wait 9 months for
it like we did with the first GPL patch.

Until a patch is released, check your NR3 directory.  There's a file
called debug.txt that is created (I think) every time you run the
program.  Immediately after a crash, send that file to Charlie Heath.

ANYONE able to host w/o N3 crashing in practice?

by Jason Mond » Sat, 02 Oct 1999 04:00:00

This solution has been passed on to me by known stable hosts:
Make the field size (in the second screen) greater than the host limit you
set on the first screen (max of 32).

Example:
1. Enter your name and car file.  Click host. then set the max connections
to 30.
2. On the next screen where you choose the track, yellows and stuff, set
the field size to 40.

This should cure hosting problems.  It is a known bug that if you have a
full server and the field size equals the max connections the program will
hang.

Jason.

PS: Thanks to the Aman and Underdog for the info and testing.

If your running window's 98 run the system file checker in system tools.  I
found the following files corrupt after installing N3:

d3dpmesh.dll, d3drm.dll, d3dxof.dll

Win98 will ask you to load your win98 CD, do this and reload the corrupt
d3d files.

After doing this, I have had no problems with N3 crashing on-line, or
offline.

Ahh well I had mine set to Max connection 15 and field size set to 43 from the
get-go and I was still crashing when hosting.  Read my post above,  it fixed
my problem anyway.

ANYONE able to host w/o N3 crashing in practice?

by Jason Mond » Sat, 02 Oct 1999 04:00:00

Thanks for the tip Rick.  Just to clear up the numbers problem I tried 15 / 43 and
it crashed too.  It seems there is a problem with limits.  Underdog hosted with
15/20 and Aman hosted with 20/30 and it worked.  There could be a couple problems
here at least we have a couple things to try :-D

Jason.

ANYONE able to host w/o N3 crashing in practice?

by Hitch-Hike » Sat, 02 Oct 1999 04:00:00

Thanks for all the replies and possible solutions!  I believe I've tried
all of them, and will run windows file checker as soon as I get home.
Looks like there isn't anyone running smoothly with this.  I to have found
that once I make it to qualify, I'm home free with no system or N3
crashes.  So, I would assume, that the failure is while my IP address is
open and others are joining.  I don't think that the AI car settings have
anything to do with it. The IP comment about bypassing won.new looks like
it will be something to try even though it will not improve any performance
of ping times... I'll let everyone know!

Again thanks for all the feedback,
sooner or later, we'll have this solved.

Totally false.  This is just another case of something happening to
someone

I raced on Alan's server yesterday night. We had a 40 min practice and a
20 min race, 7 racers, not AI drivers, and noboby go booted. Was pretty
fun! Some warping but, I think that you can expect that given the
different connection speeds and location.
