I started my own Nascar3 host today, and didn't really pay attention to what
settings and options I had set and got killed with complaints from people.
Ideally what settings should I set?  25% races?  no yellows?  pace lap?  no
damage?  one question I had also is, during online qualifying (and when I'm
the host) how do I know when everyone else is finished?  Do I just sit in my
car after I'm done qualifying, or after I'm done, hit ESC and wait for some
confirmation message that pops up?

It's a matter of preference... But, I think everybody should agree
before hand on the settings. Here what I prefer:
1) pick up races: no yellows, no pace, no damage, no more than 30%, no
player breakdown (internet will take care of breakdowns... ooops, you
just got booted)
2)league races: between 30% to 50% (so you have to make a least one pit
stop), pace one, yellow flag on, arcade damage. I also prefer fixed
setups, but that's a personal choice.

one question I had also is, during online qualifying (and when I'm

Pay attention to chat. You will get a message in red from the game
saying that the qualification is complete. Only then can you exit
qualify session without frustrating drivers.

You didn't mention the type of connection you have.  Cable modem?
xDSL?  Don't set a 32 car field if your connection can only handle 20
drivers without too much warps.  Also, I believe you, as a host, can
set a limit on the maximum latency for drivers joining your race.
That way, you wouldn't have drivers with horrible latency to begin
with, warping all over the place in your race.  Also, if you somehow
got a DNF, (because you were in an accident or whatever), do not end
the race and go setup another race.  If you end the race all together,
others will also have their race be ended.  Stay until the race is
completed.  You can go to the screen with the replay panel and watch
the race live, if you want to.

If you are hosting the race, set them the way that you want the race
to be. If they don't like it they can ***y well go to any of the
other races.  As for finishing the qualifying it will put up a message
in the chat section that says "Qualifying Complete".   Remember, you
are the host, you make the decisions.

Thanks for the tips guys, I hope to make a good host.  Yeah, I did forget to
say that I'm on 384k ADSL, so I think I should make a good host (?)

From a 'joining' perspective:  I've been into auto-sims ever since I first
laid my eyes on Papy's Indy500 game, but I can't believe I've never played
online with a racing sim (other than once or twice with Nascar1 on Kali).  I
participated in 2 races at Talladega last night and it was absolutely
unbelieveable to race against other humans, hehe.  Nobody was warping and
everyone seemed to know what they're doing.  I think I'm hooked.........
