OK, it's about the time for me to upgrade my wheel/pedals combo and so
I put to you all the standard RAS question - What wheel/pedals do you
guys recommend? Force Feedback is my only requirement.

Currently with a Saitek wheel on win ME and Athlon 1.4ghz/GF3.
Possible upgrade to Win 2k/XP once this windows install breaks ;)

Thanks ppl.

The best thing you can do is search for older RAS posts on Google,
this has been discussed a lot lately :)
Basicly your choice is between the ACT Labs and Logi Momo.

I am very pleased with my Logitech Momo FF wheel, however it is the first
one I have ever owned that is FF so I really can't compare it to others.

Unfasionable, I know, but I still like the MSFF. It's worked fine
throughout with both Win98SE and XP (I had trouble getting GPL working
under XP but the MSFF was a breeze), and I still prefer its feel to
anything else I can afford.

It's such a subjective area, though - one man's meat etc etc etc...

Yeah, I just got a second hand actlabs force RS inc shifter, and I dont know
what it is, perhaps I am not used to it, but I just don't like how it feels
compared to my old (and it really is!) MSFF gameport.  I am considering the
actlabs pedals, but on the other hand I really like the MSFF pedals so I am
not sure :/

All the best,
Ash

Changing wheels is a huge change. I changed from the original Logitech
Wingman Formula Force to their new MOMO setup. Its amasing the differnace.
Basicly where I was good before I now suck, and where I sucked I now do
well. Just for example in Dirt Track Racing Sprint Cars at Hussets speedway
I never could keep the thing off the wall coming out of turn 4. Now I run it
great. First race with new wheel I smoked the AI by over 11 seconds in a 20
lap feature. I have found for the most part I have to run a lot loser setup.
In NR2002 I had to bump up my liner setting about 20 points to get a simular
feel to the old LWFF.

Which wheel do you have Andre? Kinda thinking the Act Labs looks best,
but the Momo looks pretty good as well. Hmmm...

Don, the Momo looks pretty good (despite the price!). How is it in
terms of stiffness, for quick movements, etc? Obviously this will be
very different from a no FF wheel but I would prefer something that is
a lot free-er to move.

Not bad, also remember you  can adust the strength of the FF as well in both
windows and in the game as well.
I haven't noticed any trouble moving it quickly when I need to.

Very true, but I've always been suspicious about these wheels,
especially with the driver problems with MS's own OSs. Kind of ironic
really. I can't argue with their price though :)

I have the Momo and love it (as I wrote many times here, hence my
google-search hint :)
Couple of weeks ago I wrote a post about the act-labs wheel. I never
tested it myself, but I have two friends who bought one, and allthough
they liked it very much, the quality of the wheels and pedals was very
poor. One friend had his wheel broken within two weeks, a couple of
days later his pedal breaks in half.
I then went to the act forum and noticed a lot of people had the same
problems.

So without even having tried the ACT, I recommend the Momo.
Btw, if you think the ACT looks better than the Momo, you don't need
an ff wheel, you need a pair of glasses <joke> :)

I've had my ActLabs ForceRS about 3 years.  I broke my wheel off the
spindle once, manhandling it at Richmond.  The replacement had some
reinforcement built in that the original didn't have.

The "stock" pedals are pretty sucky, but eventually you get used to
them and they wear-in pretty well.  I haven't seen heard or smelled
the performance pedals yet, but in all honesty, I am not sure I would
really be any better with more precise equipment.

I have a weird electrical problem too: when I mash the gas, the game
senses that the wheel is turning very slightly to the right.  I would
like to get to the root of this one, but it doesn't cause catastrophic
problems, and it is predictable.

I guess I am a sucker, but I've been married to these too long to
divorce them now.  The forces and fit and finish on the wheel just
feel better than anything else I have tried.  I haven't tried the MOMO
yet, though.  I am sad to hear that quality seems to be going downhill
at AL, though; it makes me think these might be the last AL product I
own.

'til death do us part,
Gerald

It's those new act pedals (with the clutch) that seem to break down
easily. I read posts from different people whose pedals broke in
exactly the same way, it seems to be a weak construction in the
plastic. Also the worldwide production of springs have tripled since
the release of the pedals since those seem to break easily too.
Act labs does send replacements for broken parts, but that takes a
couple of weeks, and it's no fun when the equipment breaks again in a
couple of weeks :-/

I actually had the same problem with my old wheel for a while, only it
was when I jumped on the brakes. It would pull to the left by a fair
bit and I ran into the wall so many times because of it. Only solution
was to reinstall windows :(

Actually I wasn't referring to the looks of the wheels, more like
"looks like a good buy". Do you really think the AL wheel looks that
ugly? The momo is quite a nice looking wheel I must admit but I didn't
think the AL was that much of an ugly duckling.
