3d card confusion.....

I can't say for certain but I think RAM is the key, I upgraded from an AMD
K6 running at 233 Mhz to an AMD K6-2 clocked at 350 Mhz. In Viper Racing I
only gained about 1 fps from (29.2 fps to 30.3 fps at full resolution), but
when I went from 57mb of RAM (SIMM and DIMM combined) up to 144mb RAM (PC
100 compliant DIMM only) my frame rate in Viper Racing shot up to close to
60 fps at full resolution. In Gran Prix Legends a full field of AI at max
resolution gave me about 5 fps? (or some ridiculously low frame rate)before
the upgrade to a frame rate of about 35 fps (18ish in heavy traffic)
afterwards.

The 8mb Hercules Thriller works great for gpl...whether it's the best option
i'm not sure, but it gave me 10fps increase over my monster 1 running on a
p233mmx-64mb rig. I highly recommend it.

Depends. :)  Do you want an add on card?  Do you want to replace the current
card?  Do you want to have a next gen card for next gen racing games?
Ok...with a P2 266 you can use a Voodoo2 card which means you won't have to
replace your current card and that would be my suggestion.  Thriller may
give you a few more FPS at the P2 266 level, but not much more.  If you get
a Thriller, sure it works now...but with new games coming out with DX3 6.1
specs or even DX7 specs soon, there are better ways to spend that money, not
to mention the Thriller basically only does Renedition API well.  Cards such
as the TNT2, Permedia3 and Savage4 oh and Voodoo3 should all blow away the
current cards.  Anyways, long winded...I'd suggest if you need a fast fix
and you don't plan on anything further in the future, go with the Thriller.
If you are looking at possibly getting a 2D/3D solution in the near future,
avoid the Thriller all together and get a Voodoo2 12 meg card (Diamond, CL,
Guillomont all seem to ahve decent, low priced cards..about 150 or less) to
tide you over.
