I'm not much of a gamer.  Seeing the recent price drop on the consoles got
me thinking about maybe picking one up.  Who's got the best race games?  I'm
not interested in NASCAR or F1 too much......maybe rally, mostly street car
racing.

Should I just pick up a wheel for my PC?  It's no *** machine and I'm not
replacing my video card for games.

you are not replacing your video card for games .........but you are willing
to buy a new console. You could get a kick ass vid card for the price of a
console system and 1 game for it.

You could get a kick ass console and 4 games for the price of a top of
the line vid card.  ;o)

For street racing you probably will want Gran Turismo 3 on the PS2.  I
have an Xbox, and so far the only good racing games for it are NASCAR
Heat, F1 2001, Rallisport Challenge, and Project Gotham Racing.  Of
those four the only street racing game is PGR, but even though it has a
pretty realistic feel to it many of the tracks are very narrow and
tricky, not really conducive to good head-to-head racing.  Rallisport
Challenge OTOH is a total blast, even if you don't think you are into
rally racing you will probably like it.  But there are rally games for
the PS2 also.  For the Xbox there is also Test Drive and a couple other
similarly forgettable ones which should only be bought by people who
like to crash cars, and that's about it for now.  Eventually Pro Race
Driver and some version of Need for Speed will be available for Xbox.
Also said to be on the way are Sega GT 2002 (similar to GT3 but probably
not as realistic), and factory sims for Mercedes Benz, Lotus, and
Lamborghini.  Impossible to predict what the quality of those titles
will be.

How important are graphics to you?   For under $90 you can get a PSOne, Gran
Turismo 2, and a memory card.  You should be able to find Colin McRae 2
realtivly easy.  and if you're lucky you can find Jarrett & Labonte Racing (aka
TOCA World Touring Cars).

You may not be getting the flashy graphics that the new consoles have, but you
can get some quality games for the PSX.

I like my ATI all in wonder - tv and video capture are important to me.  I
also kinda like the idea of getting a dvd player with one of these consoles
(my computer dvd doesn't output to the tv anymore with XP).

I guess I'm kinda looking at a Xbox or PS2.....  I've seen that 2 of the
Xbox's top games are race/ralley (I know it's not going for $150).  I'd just
like to hear what you guys suggest for what I'm looking for in a game
system.

I only own a PS2 so I cannot comment on the X-Box.  The PS2 has Gran Turismo
3 and World Rally Championship, two pretty good games.  V-Rally 3 and Colin
MaCrae 3 (both rally games) are due out soon (V-Rally 3 is already out in
Europe.).  I went for the PS2 over the X-Box for three reasons-- the PS2 has
better sport's games, a better polish and look to its games, and Sony has
been at this a long time.  The X-Box is relatively new.  MS will through a
bunch of cash at the X-Box and possibly forget about the polish.

This is the PS2 side of things. Some of these are out now, the others are
being released sometime this year. Pick out anything you like. For racing on
the streets, Burnout 2 and The Getaway are probably going to be for you
(neither are out yet, but the original Burnout has been around for +6
months).

Gran Turismo 3
World Rally Championship
Colin McRae Rally 3
Burnout
V-Rally 3
The Getaway
Stuntman
Pro Rally 2002
Master Rallye
Rally Championship (SCi)
Gran Turismo Concept: Tokyo-Geneva
Gran Turismo Online
Auto Modellista
Total Immersion Racing
F355 Challenge
Mercedes Benz World Racing
TOCA Race Driver
Starsky & Hutch
F1 2002
Formula One 2002
NASCAR Heat 2002
Gumball 3000
Alpine Racer 3

Yes, but that's not top of the line.

Xbox has PGR, TestDrive, and MotoGP, F1-2001, RalliSport and Nascar.  All
excellent games.
Sega GT (not out yet), and CM 3.0 should complete the line-up, nicely.   Not
to mention the overall value versus the PS/2 for online *** (debatable I
know, however you need for hardware for the PS/2 to go online).

After seeing the PS/2's graphics (even on GT3) I'd have to say the best
console driving game I've ever had the pleasure to play/own is MotoGP.  The
feeling of speed, the overall graphic effects of speed, overall sound
quality (true surround sound, not emulated), weather effects (the rain is
photo realistic), time to load levels etc. is awesome.

Now that's just my opinion as a gamer for 22+ years.

As some have mentioned, both the XBOX (Rallisport Challenge) and PS2
(World Rally Championship) have current gen rally titles that are
well-received.  Check Randy Magruder's reviews at digitalsports.com for very
comprehensive coverage.

AFAIK, Gran Turismo 3 (PS2) still rates as THE racing/driving console title.
I bought the PSX just for GT and GT2 and a PS2 for GT3.  At the current price,
it is pretty darned attractive.

Someone mentioned F355 being available for the PS2?  Wasn't this project
shelved?  I have the DC version.  A full PS2 update would move it to the top
of the picks.

I'm less impressed by the XBOX's Project Gotham Racing.  But admittedly this
is based on occasional play at Best Buy and previous experience with their
similar Dreamcast title, Metropolis Street Racer.

Sega GT2?  There's always hope.  In this case, I'd hope it doesn't play or
look like the original version on the DC.

You can get by with a joystick too.  Though I think pedals add a lot to the
control and experience.

From what I have read, the Xbox is the better DVD player, but you have
to buy the $30 remote to make it able to play DVD movies.

I don't have an all-in-wonder (must be confusing me with someone else), but
I can do 1600X1200X32 to a 22" MitsuBishi DiamondPro just fine :)
