I've read that it has a more compatible DVD player, not better.  Sony's has
a few more features but has issues with some DVDs.

The $30.00 is really a license fee.  The hardware is ready to go, however
the software is locked out until you put the IR port in.  This setup lowers
the cost of the Xbox for those who don't require it to be a DVD player.  I
use it for a DVD player almost every weekend, it was one reason I could
justify buying it back in November, 2001.

: From what I have read, the Xbox is the better DVD player, but you have
: to buy the $30 remote to make it able to play DVD movies.

Somehow 1600x1200 doesn't sound like a TV-screen rez.

(And I know you weren't boasting abt. yer Rae85x; it was a rhetortical
jibe.)

It's still in development, due out in September. SCEE are publishing and
they don't tend to drop stuff, however late it gets (The Getaway?).

Well, I have both consoles and on balance the best console driving
experience is with GT3 AND the FF wheel for the PS2. This pair will come in
pretty expensive though, although not as much as upgrading your PC.

Xbox driving games are OK generally, but no decent controllers, and nothing
quite up to GT3 standard, means that the PS2 edges it for now. Sega GT2002
for Xbox might swing the balance that way I guess.

However, the game I'm playing most is the venerable Grand Prix Legends
(great sims don't die - they just get modded!). Don't go near a console if
you've played this, since it's not worth the effort to downgrade your
physics :0

If GPL runs OK on your machine then you've pretty much got all the driving
sim you can handle.

But, gee, didn't he say that he was not interested in F1?  That kinda rules GPL
out...

I'd say anyone with an interest in an auto sim would like GPL. If they
don't then perhaps they're looking for an auto game instead.

I guess I'm not anyone.  I agree that the physics are superb, I love watching
old F1 footage, but frankly the game does not interest me.

Hopefully they'll fix the control before it's released. Looked great
and played awful at E3.

Hmmm, the control was absolutely horrid in the DC version.  Just like
pilot-induced oscillation.  Is this what you saw at E3?  Doesn't bode well at
all.

Thanks for the nod :).  Also I did F1 2002 and Le Mans 24 hours
reviews recently at IGN PC (pc.ign.com).

No doubt, but really the trick on the PS2 is to go ahead and get the
Logitech Driving Force and a PS2.  That'll make titles like Sprint
Cars, GT3, WRC, F1 2002 all MUCH better.

Oh yeah I have the DC version as well.  The big deal there is we
finally get full race replays!

Oddly, I thought the same thing, but I went autocrossing in my Miata
and felt that the game actually simulates those cone runs pretty well.
With rear wheel drive you definitely risk power-on oversteer and the
weight transfer is pretty extreme especially because you're in lower
gears and the torque is high.  But overall, they made the thing drift
too easily and correct too easily, with nary a hint of understeer.

Amen.

If you get a Logitech Driving Force, it works for the PC *and* the
PS2, with full Force Feedback on both.

I'd say get the wheel and be done with it :)
