Neither...

Jarrett and Labonte Stock Car Racing on PSX or
Colin McRae 2 on PSX.

These two are still the best console racers...

Nice looking graphics but horrible physics.

WRONG!!!!

Great driving physics, poor collision physics, poor AI.

Would you consider them true sims? For instance, can you dab the brakes and
fly through 90 degree residential corners at 170? Can you clip a wall
without damage? Will the car go on it's roof? Is there any "if this-then
this", canned kinda stuff? How deep are the tire models? Do they go cold,
greasy? Do they have understandable slip angle curves? Can you use real
world techniques to control the cars?

I ask because I am in the middle of conversation about sims vs. arcades and
have only tried F355 for DC and GT3 for PS2.

Most console games have to cut down on the physics side because they
are too CPU intensive (and most of the players will not fancy it
anyway). This is what separates WSC for the PS2 and PC for example;
for the PC things go wildly further (and I do mean wildly).

Compared to GPL, N4, or even GT3, I'd have to honestly say that they are
more arcadish.  But they are not a Daytona USA or Sega Rally either.
They're somewhere in between, with CMR2 having particularly good sim-like
driving physics on gravel, sand, and snow (not so good on asphalt though).
Unlike GT3 though, these games do have real damage effects and play a
critical part in the game.  Yes, you can end up on your roof in both of
these games.

The highlights to me for each of these are:

J&L Stock Car Racing:
- Very aggressive AI that do not follow a predetermined path around the
track
- 16 cars on screen during each race
- 20+ Real life tracks
- Deep career mode
- AI race each other, occasionally ending up in wrecks that happen at random
- Loads of cars to unlock and race

CMR2:
- Great physics
- Real damage
- True championship mode
- Fun arcade mode for multiplayer fun
- Hot seat and split screen mode for multi-player championships
- Decent tuning options (but no GT3)
- Rally Racing (need I say more)
- Very slick presentation

Best of all, you can probably pick these games up for $10 at your used video
game store.

EA's F1 2001 is pretty great too, but I'm not a big F1 fan.  Give me rally
or touring cars anyday!  (can you believe you're hearing that from a Yank?)
I've never played F355, so I cannot compare to it.

At the end of the day, these are my favorite two games.  Fun, exciting
racing with enough reality to make it a challenge.  All racing games make
tradeoffs.  I think Codemasters have made the best decisions on where to
make these tradeoffs.

My 2 cents...
