GP3 - Joystick spiking problem

by J Becke » Thu, 24 May 2001 21:42:55

Hi all,

I bought GP3 the weekend it came out, and played it loads... then one
day several months ago I reformatted my system to resolve some other
issues (I'm a software developer). Ever since, GP3 has been "spiking"
on the joystick, and I have no idea why. No other games do it AT ALL.

Imagine you're driving down the road in GP3 - without changing the
joystick input, the steering suddenly snaps full lock either left or
right, and then comes back again. It happens for perhaps a tenth of a
second - certainly enough to throw you off the track.

I've re-installed my sound, graphics and DirectX drivers, and replaced
the Joystick and soundcard - none of this has stopped the problem.
I've checked the config in GP3 and tried just about all options -
again without success.

It happens in the unpatched and patched versions of the game.

I repeat - it doesn't happen in any other game.

Anybody got any ideas?

Jonathan

Perhaps toggling the 'Poll with interupts' setting in Joystick propeties
could help things.

Tried it - nope.

The really galling thing is that it used to be fine.

The only thing I can guess is GP3 asks for something specific from the
motherboard or processor, and something on my motherboard or procesor
has failed...

when does it happen? every time you drive? i had this exact problem.. but
only on the very first drive... after that it would be fine... so i always
started a lap in practice before starting a saved game

NO! - Like I said, it doesn't happen anywhere else. It's to do with
GP3. I wrote a small app to graph the joystick throws too - totally
smooth output.

My main joystick is a MS Precision Pro - which is digital output.
It also does it with a brand new Logitech stick I bought...

I know you said that you tried it...but that was the fix for my
problem which had the same symptoms as your problems. That polling
think used to drive me nuts until I unclicked that option. This was
in WinME.

I realize these aren't exactly the same, but I had the same problem with
N3 by Papy.  I hadn't changed anything, but when racing online one
night, it was as if someone kept grabbing the joystick and jerking it
*real hard* to the right.  I don't know if this option is available in
GPL, but what cured it for me was switching from DirectX to Papyrus
driver while in the "options" section of the game.  Has been rock stable
ever since.

try checking that box for "wheel pulls left" maybe that will help.
