Saitek X36 - spiking problems?

by Martin Kaareng LN-GA » Mon, 24 Apr 2000 04:00:00

I think I'm going to buy this stick with the throttle.
However, I already own a Cyborg 3D and it
began spiking after a short while.  Does the
USB version of the X36 spike?  Are there any
bugs associated with the setup?

Thanks,

Martin

No the X-36 does not spike and the only bugs in the setup are in
documentation that's lacking to say the least, however there is good help
available. Here's some quick tips.

Quick guide for setup of the X-36 USB:

You must first install DirectX 7.0a for the X-36 USB to work properly. There
is a link to 7.0a on the Saitek website.

Make sure you get the Saitek *** Extensions version 1.3. That's the
programming software. Earlier versions created enormous problems. It's very
difficult to tell which version might ship with the X-36 so go to
www.saitekusa.com and get SGE 1.3.

Do not connect the X-36 to your computer until after you install SGE 1.3,
your computer re-boots and it asks you to connect the stick.

Go to the following dicussion groups for help and information.
www.delphi.com/just_saitek/  and http://www.racesimcentral.net/
or post your questions here and many can offer thier help.

In addition to installing DX7a and version 1.3 of SGE it is also
recommended that you install the service package 1 upgrade to
Windows.  It can be obtained from the MicroSoft site.  It fixes
bugs in Windows reading of the USB port.

A few months ago I bought the game port version of the X36 and
had nothing but problems with the spiking and programming of the
stick and throttle.  So back it went.  Now I have the USB
version and have been using it for about a month.  I downloaded
a configuration file from http://www.f4hq.com/hotasST.html
labled DrDeathX36.zip and installed it with no problems.  The
setup has been very stable and so far I am well satisfied with
it.  The stick has a larger "dead zone" than the MS Sidewinder I
was using but I'm getting to it.  Most of the commands you use
in the game can be accessed from the stick and throttle using Dr
Deaths config file although I still use the keyboard for a few.

My Saitek X-36 started spiking after about a year and a half. Gonna try to
open it and replace the pot... Anyone with any experience of doing this?

Cheers,

I should have mentioned that I was talking about my X36 USB which is
digital. I got it when it first came out last year and it has never been
anything but rock solid.

My old X36 which was not digital did start spiking after a couple of years
and the Thrustmaster F22 I tried started spiking uncontrollably after a week
and a half!

The USB version does not spike as it is a digital device unlike the old
version which was analog.  I've owned the Analog/Gameport previously and it
did start spiking after a year or so.  Now with the Digital/USB version it
is rock steady 100% of the time.

I havn't seen any bugs, but be sure to download the latest version of SGE
(v1.3) from Saitek's site before installing the controller.
