TM GP1 spiking problem

by Andrew Fielde » Wed, 13 May 1998 04:00:00

My GP1 seems to have a spiking problem on the steering pot.
I first noticed this while playing GP2, my car suddenly 'twitched'
for no apparent reason. At first I thought it was my driving,
but after using the TM propanel app, it's clear that there is a
problem on the steering. It randomly produces spikes, even when
I'm making no movement on the wheel.
BTW I have the 'poll with interrupts' off in the W95 calibration
panel.

Cleaning the pot with contact cleaner didn't seem to clear up the
problem. Could the pot be wearing out? I've had the wheel for
about 10 months. What's the normal expected lifetime?

TIA.

I was seeing the same type of problem with my GP1.  Cleaning
the pot helped but didn't solve the problem.  I did find
one thing that helped the situation though.

In my bios settings, I had the ISA clock set at the highest
speed (1/2 or 1/3 PCI bus speed).  Lowering that setting to
the minimum removed a lot of the twitching from the joystick
axes.

Contact TM as I did, and they will send you replacment pots. But
be prepared to sweat a little when replacing the pot for the wheel,
because you have to bend a little plastic finger that holds the
pot in place. If this breaks, you have a big problem...

You can use safety wire to hold the steering pot in place. See Alison's web
site for info on the care and feeding of TM wheels:

I had a GP1 for three months. The wheel became very sloppy (it wobbled up
and down because of bearing wear) in no time, but was usable. Then I
couldn't get full throttle. I only realised this when my lap times (TOCA,
remember) went way down. The calibration screen showed the gas pot jumping
from full deflection to no deflection. Dirt, sure, but why should I clean
the damn thing every five minutes? I returned the wheel to PC World and got
a Digital Edge F! Sim compact. These seems to be a LOT better constructed.
30 quid more though...
