GP3 - Joystick Problems - Still No Solutions

I have been without GP3 now for about 6 months.

While playing it, the Joystick spikes erratically - every few seconds.
Enough to throw you off the track sometimes.

I have tried every configuration change suggested and not suggested,
with little success... from turning on/off the interrupt polling to
removing/reinstalling the 1.13 patch.

I *think* it's just a case that my PC hates GP3. There are no hardware
conflicts, but the computer does have a lot of kit inside it - two SCSI
cards, two USB devices connected, the soundcard, both serial ports used,
parallel port used, Ethernet card...

The joystick is plugged into the normal joystick socket on the sound
card (a Creative SB16). It's a Microsoft Wingman digital stick, so it's
not an analogue pot problem. I've tried new joysticks and a new
soundcard too - all with no effect what so ever.

The behaviour isn't repeated in any other game (it's meant I usually
play either GT3-ASpec, or GPL)

It's not like I'm totally thick either - I work as a software developer
and have built loads of PCs in the past...

Anybody have any ideas what could solve it?

Oops... meant to just say Microsoft digital stick - I bought a Wingman
to figure out if that was causing it...

[snip]

In "Control Panel", go to "Joystick" or "*** Options", trying
turning off the "Polling with interrupts" or something similar to
that. It worked for me.

I actually said about that... reduced it, but it's still there...

Try de-selecting polling

if that does not fix the problem, then in GP3:

Goto:
    - Main menu, then
    - Options, then
    - Controls, then
    - Advanced, then
    - Turn up ( i.e. towards 100% ) the amount of:
        - Steering Help
        - Low Sensitivity Zone

until the steering wheel doesn't "flick" back and forth and your car doesn't
jump around too much in the straight-aways.

Also: the control file settings you need to go fast differ from:
          -  track to track
          - different years of carsets
    >> So have a different control file for each track and for each track's
weather, and if you play different carsets, then again for each different
carset.

P.S.  I use GP3 v1.13 98 carset because it is the "lowest common
denominator" for all versions of GP3 = we can fairly compare times.

I had this problem in GP2 and the 'polling' solution helped. I had the
problem again in Hockenheim/GP3. My solution here[since 'polling' didn't
help] was similar to what John B says, I "reduced sensitivity with speed"
and while I could see the spikes, they didn't toss me off the track!
