F1 2000 - first impressions

by Coli » Sat, 18 Mar 2000 04:00:00

I played it for 1 hour this morning and here's my impressions FWIW...

The Good
=======
On my PIII 533 with GeForce it ran smooth as silk with ALL detail turned on
and 22 cars in 800x600.
The physics are improved since SCGT, and damage is correctly modelled.
With all help options turned off, it is VERY difficult. Donuts on the
starting grid etc. =)
Pit-crew speech is superb...
e.g. "Frenzen has spun at turn 1 be careful"
"Button has come out of the pits, looks like he's on a three stop strategy"
When you accelerate and brake hard, the***pit perspective changes slightly
to give the illusion of movement.  VERY, VERY COOL.
The game is based on the current F1 season. with all the correct drivers and
tracks.
The controller screen gives you a multitude of options.  You can kill the
deadzone, play with the sensitivity etc,
There are many help options, brake, throttle, overstear control, automatic
spin help etc.
Brake bias can be altered while driving.
The level of detail can be changed on the fly, trees off/on, buildings
off/on etc.
It seems as though engine damage is correctly modelled.  I popped it into a
low gear at high speed and from then on the engine sounded VERY rough and
would not accelerate properly.  Just like in GPL.
The AI seems to be pretty good.  I've seen aggressive manouevers from the
AI, plus PLENTY of spins =)
Gravel traps work as they should.  Come to a stop and you're in BIG trouble.
However, if you have enough momentum you drive right through them.  When you
come out, car slides all over the place.  Very nice.
The only track I raced on was Silverstone.  It appeared to be nicely
reproduced.  Looking forward to trying Indy tonight =)
There are no hands on the steering wheel (which moves) but you can turn the
wheel off.  I actually like having the wheel there.
Oh and NO BIG HEADS!!!

The Bad
======
In 1024x768 with 22 cars and all the detail turned on I had a little
slowdown.
I could not change the***pit view during the game.  I could change it on
the options screen though.
The two cars I raced with (Jaguar, Ferrari) both had 7 speed gearboxes.
Only the Ferrari should.
The engine sounds are not the best.  All cars sound pretty much the same.
The A3D support is excellent though. =)
The physics model is closer to SCGT than GPL.

Overall
=====
In all respects it blows away the competition.  I see myself playing this
one A LOT.
F1RS, Monaco, GP2 do not even get a look in any more.  This game is hands
down better than all of them.
I've already got my pre-order in .  I suggest you all do the same =)

Cheers,
...Colin

One other thing...
It looks like the designers of F1 2000 had GPL in their sights when they
developed this game.
If you hit V or N while driving you "look" left and right.
You don't just get a left or right view instantly, the***pit actually pans
left and right EXACTLY as it does in GPL.
Coincidence?  I think not...

Colin, you can change the***pit views with the insert, delete, home,
end, page up and page down views during the race. With the + key you
can change the car you're watching. Lots of really cool car cams!!

is it not working correctly on my system or do the graphics really look that
bad? images arent smooth at all on my end, especially the trees around the
track etc. I checked the Ini file and d3d is the primary card.. not
software.  If i was in software mode id have to believe the amount of
slowdown would be way higher at 1024x768 than it is. Just curious whatd you
think of the graphics?

There are two cars with 7 speed gearboxes this year, Ferrari being one, and I
am blanking on the second (it very well might have been Jaguar).  However,
I have since read that all the cars in F1 2000 have 7 speeds (is that
correct?).  If that is so, it is obviously very wrong.

F1 2000 has 7 gears for every car.  Wow what a great features <giggles>

Im almost sure it's Jordan the second team who has a 7gearbox.  They had it
for a couple of years.  Ubisoft has it that way, and Im sure Eddie told that
numerous times in interviews.  IIRC, Ferrari only used 7gears on a limited
number of tracks, not the "slow circuits"  (Monaco, Hungary, Ring)

that

The Jordon in F1RS has 6 gears. I know because that is the team I
usually drive for.

No they didn't.
ISI (Image Space Incorporated) made that game.
EA is just the publisher.

Is that why they call it the 'silly season'?

Well, despite that, it is true that the lead guy on the ISI team was working
on GP3 before he switched.

Are you talking about Gjon?
If so, your wrong.
Gjon did Dept of Defense contracts before starting ISI
SCGT was the first race sim that Gjon ever did.

Greg, we were talking about F12000 and how well (or poorly) it modeled the cars
of the 2000 season. F1RS is based on 1996.  This season Ferrari and perhaps
Jordan have gone go 7 speed gearboxes.
