To Ed Martin: Server Caused Crashes?

I've had a ringside seat for some very wacky Talledega starts (and I've
saved the replays for them too) and I've got a theory. That the server
or the phone lines (or something other than the drivers) are causing some
(certainly not all) of the crazy crashes we're getting. Cars jump sideways
and even backwards. Cars disappear and reappear. Little touches between cars
cause very big spins.

And this seems to happen the most at starts, when the server has the most
work to do. Does your server operate by only telling me things that I need
to know? For example, if I'm on the backstraight, I don't need to know the
position of a car on the front straight cause I can't see it. But at the
start, I need to see all the cars in front and in back of me. And so does
everyone else. So the server is ***?

I too think this could be true. I raced yesterday with the NCAR league
guys and we forgot to enable pace lap. I changed my setup to have a
shorter 1st gear for the standing start but others didn't - I'm
CONVINCED I drove straight through the car on front of me on the grid!
He just disappeared and I drove on through - wierd!

Cheers!
John

I can't get into proprietary information, but yes, because there are so
many cars so close together at the start of the race, that's why you
tend to see some freaky behavior.  It's not really the server ***,
it's more that the phone lines & modem technology is ***.  We can
only send so much info down an analog phone line.
