Question on video card upgrade

System specs:

Pentium 1.7
256 MB 2100 DDR Ram
GF3 TI-200
7200 RPH Hard drive

I got a little cash for a video card upgrade...
Anyone have suggestions for the most bang for the buck
in terms of upgrading to a better video card? Something
that would compliment my current CPU, etc...

TIA

If you can get a used 9700pro on ebay do that, but either a 9600pro or
fx5900 would be good.

Not sure about pricing, but...

... will give you a good estimate of relative performances. As a
convert to ATI (love the fast x4 fsaa) I wouldn't buy anything less than
an 9600Pro or 9600XT, which is at the bottom end of leading edge
performance. Having said that, if you can find a 9700Pro you might not
have to spend much more, and that's a very quick beast even now.

FWIW I just "invested" (your hardware may go down in value as well as
plummet) in a 9800se AIW card because (a) I needed (ok, wanted) the AIW
features for my second box (b) there's a slim chance it'll software mod to
a 9800Pro. I think *very* slim in my case as the supplier has obviously
repackaged it judging by the state of the antistatic bag :-) Still, it
performs around the 9600XT mark and is good value for money if the AIW are
useful.

My specs are identical other than ram. I have 512mb. I went from the TI-200 to
an ATI 9600 pro. Lost 10-12 fps. The quality is better but.....After some help
from the RAS folks and some tweaking (no improvement)  the consensus seemed to
be that the processor may be bottlenecking the card.

The GForce runs N2003 better in OpenGL for me. I assume you used DirectX
D3D with the 9600?

Thanks for all the input.

After some test I can confirm that on my 1700+ system moving from a ti4200
to a 9800se (similar performance) didn't gain me anything worth talking
about (so far anyway). Sadly it doesn't software mod either without
artefacts, but as I wanted the AIW features I haven't blown much money
compared to the cost of a good stand alone TV card.

I'd expect my 9800se to be better/faster with fsaa engaged but I haven't
tested it much... this box is mainly for working/email/the web and now
recording output from the main box.

Yep D3D on the 9600. My Nvidia ran faster for me in D3D than OGL.
