OT : video card upgrade

Ok, I could not resist anymore. I upgraded my trusty old Geforce 2 GTS for a
Radeon 9800 Pro aand I was wondering if everything went ok, because I am not
really impressed withe the result.
Sometimes in UT2003 I get small framerate problems  even at a resolution of
1024*768 and I  was wondering if that is normal.... In F1C I don't get very
good results either, not much better than my Geforce however I can use 4*AA.
I think my scores in 3dmark03 (5232) and 3d mark01SE (12874) are normal
(BTW AMDXP 2200+ , 512 ram, Audigy, Radeon 9800 Pro 128 Mb)

This how I installed the card

I uninstalled the detonator drivers (Nvidia)
I turned off the pc, removed the Geforce and installed the ATI
Restarted
Downloaded the lastest catalyst 3.6 drivers
Installed them...
reboot
that's it.

I was wondering If I missed something... Or maybe I was just expecting too
much for a change in  framerates....
Anyone ? I know there are people here who did the same upgrade...

TIA,
Jimster

Your CPU (I hope you have fast DDR memory to back it up) will now be
the bottleneck for a lot of games. The main advantage of the 9800 is
to allow you to play at higher resolutions with FSAA&AF while
maintaining a playble framerate.

You shouldn't have any framerate problems with that rig.  Have you installed
the AGP miniport driver for your motherboard?

To add to that, I just did an upgrade from a GT 4200Ti to a Radeon 9800
Pro, and wasn't all that impressed straight off the bat with the
improvments (though I am running an Athlon 1800+, so I knew there would
be some bottleneck there).   It seemed like I got only a few fps more

anisotropic at a decent framerate (between 35-40fps).   That made all
the difference, and I no longer have the buyer's remorse.

If you mean you are getting stuttering, this is a elusive but fairly common
complaint with the latest radeon models, tho its not an issue for me.  I'm
not sure it has a single sure-fire solution, but raising agp voltage, and
tweaking pci latency settings

are popular.  Try the www.rage3d.com forums also.

Euhm no, I tought that Windowx XP included a VIA 4-in1 set.

Everything worked fine before...Never installed that driver before...

Maybe something I need to look into
