OT: Which Video Card for the Best Value??

by Dave St.Ong » Wed, 17 Nov 1999 04:00:00

Before I get to my questions, I realize that this is the wrong newsgroup,
but because I love racing sims, I read this group alot, and see that many of
you are quite knowledgeable and helpful to others in the group.  For that, I
thank you....

Well, I've decided to buy a new video card, and because of my preference to
racing and sports games, I've decided to go with a Voodoo 3 card.  However,
which one gives me the most bang for my buck?  The choices are the Voodoo 3
2000 for $155 (Cdn), or the Voodoo 3 3000 for $215 (Cdn).  Is the difference
between the two significant enough to get the 3000, or just go the 2000
route.

Secondly, do I have to disconnect my ATI Rage Pro when I install the new
card, or can I run the two of them together?  If I can run the two of them,
which one do I plug the monitor into? (I know some of these questions are
basic, even stupid, but please bear with my computer ignorance).

Finally, where's a good place to get updated drivers, since I will probably
need them, as I really never update them....

I believe others in the group will tell you to get the 2000 and overclock
it.  I own both a V3/2000 PCI and a V3/3000 AGP.  They are both really nice
cards.  It matters to some degree what your processor speed is.  These are
both fast video cards and you need some processor speed to keep up with
them.  For instance, if you have a P166, don't bother with the 3000.

You need to yank the Rage Pro.  The V3s are standalone cards, unlike the
3dfx Monster cards you may be thinking of which were an add-on to your
regular card.  That's actually why I have the two V3s.  I didn't realize
this until I bought the V3/2000 PCI, intending to use it with my ATI
All-In-Wonder Pro AGP.  When I discovered I couldn't use the ATI any more, I
got a V3/3000 AGP to replace it and a hauppauge WinTV PCI to do my
tv/videocap stuff with.

see above

Your new card will come with drivers on a cd, but if you want the newest
versions, just go to the website for the cards' manufacturer:
