GPL Newbie; Looking for setup advice

Hi all, after reading so much about GPL I decided to look for and acquire a
copy for myself, which I have recently done.

I am looking for input on installation/setup and what would be the best
downloads to get intially.
Also what are the best websites to visit/hang-out at for GPL

I am going to run the sim initially on my machine, which is a Soyo SY-KT400
with a XP2400, 512MB ram and GF4 Ti4200. OS is windowsXP Pro.

Anyone have any advice/tips ? Thanks a bunch !

There are tons of sites which, I'm sure, others here will guide you to.
However, you will definitely need at least 3 patches:

1.  The D3D patch is needed in order to run GPL in Direct 3D (required by your
videocard)
2.  The Version 1.2 patch (if you want to run with force feedback), and
3.  The Fast CPU patch.  Your system is actually too fast for "stock" GPL.

They are all available at www.papy.com.  (Don't worry about any of them being
labeled as beta or unsupported -- they work.)

To race online, you'll have to get onto VROC.  The url is www.vroc.net.  LOTS
to read there.

For most anything else regarding GPL, try hotgrids.racesimcentral.com/  (That's
right -- there is no www.)

That should be plenty to get you started.

Good Luck -- the course of your life has now changed.  (For the better!)

I suggest you have a look at the Beginner's Guide I wrote for GPL at:

I updated it recently to include lots of new stuff.

That's twice you've quoted me now Steve. Thanks :) Since I compiled that
list, I've updated my beginner's guide to include GPL Glance.

GPL Newbie; Looking for setup advice

Thanks everyone. Looks like I have my work cut out for me !

I see that there is a OpenGL patch. Is it better to run the video in OpenGL
or D3D ?
Is the CPU patch for use on any modern processor ? Once I get the sim
running on my machine, it will be installed on two others; a XP2000 and a
1.4 T-Bird.

Thanks again. Hoping to get the sim by friday so I can play with it over the
weekend.
Say another quick question. The multiplayer is good, no ? - since it is a
Papy Sim I am assuming it is.
Also, how is the AI ? We run a small (3 of us) offline league using NAS2002.
Ran all of last seasons races on mondays; 50% races at 90%. We are going to
step it up to 95% this year, but not run all the races. Cut out some of the
1 1/2 mile tracks, so we are looking for another sim to run on alternate
monday's. The ovals get sort of tiring at times, especially when the NAS2002
AI dive bombs ya from behind or runs up your arse.
I am hoping GPL will fit the bill !!

Thanks Again !

Read these GPL posts, dusted off GPL which I bought about a year ago and
never really got into, mainly 'cause I suck at it big time. Never played
anything online so, downloaded the minimum files, joined the Club and got
the literature, tried to log on last night and got a "not connected" screen.

The obvious questions I suppose are: What time zone are the quoted times in?
I'm in GMT + 2 hours. Is there any impromptu action besides the quoted
Friday and Saterday events that one could pop in to? Do I have some other
kind of connection problem?

Yes. Gpl was already patched to V1.2. Loaded WinVroc, applied Vrocfix and
gpldiscofix, and for fun, sound mods. Did all the Yahoo confirmations, ran
WinVroc, set parameters e.g. pointing to GPL directory.

Not sure of next step, but must still digest the e-literature I received
from the club, maybe something else in there.

Can you join any other races? The green ones on vroc are open servers
(pick-up races). Try to join those to see if it works. At what point did you
get the "not connected" message?

Most leagues use vroc passworded servers (the blue races) so of course you
need the password to join from the literature, and choose the correct
server. Best place to ask is probably the pre-race chatroom in vroc really.

Ran WinVroc, PC connected to internet, Message on WinVroc opening screen
said 'please wait'. After about 5 minutes another screen came up which said
'not connected'. Logged out and played Redline Racer, a really great retro
discovery.

Could you see the chatroom whilst waiting for the racelist? If so then ask
in there how to get the racelist up.

Nope, nothing to interact with. Just a blank (except for please wait msg)
WinVroc start screen, and then the 'not connected' screen.

If you are using ZoneAlarm or another firewall you'll need to allow access
for WinVROC.exe. It doesn't need server access unless you host though. You
need to allow gpl.exe too.
