Opinions on RS Force Wheel?

by M. & A. Sha » Mon, 13 Dec 1999 04:00:00

Any opinions (good or bad) about the Act Labs RS Force
wheel? I'm looking for a force wheel and it sounds good but
I'm debating between that one and the Logitech...the shifter
does sound really cool.

Thanks

i have a act labs ff  and absolutly love it
i will confess that i didn't even look at other wheels
i was going by a PC GAMER review, which gave it mega stars
love the wheel (thick and meaty)
and the petals are just as good so long as you wear a slipper or mocasson
(sp?)
sneakers okay, boots a no-no

Hello,

I have a review up of the ACT LABS Force RS at Powersims.com.  Please visit
us and look under the hardware/controllers on the menu on the left.

I use the ACT LABS Force RS and my primary steering device and love it.

The hot wheels right now are the Act Labs and  the Shifter, or the Guillemot
Ferrari Racing Wheel which has the stick shift built in. Both have gotten
good reviews online. The Guillemot has will cost $130 in the US, the Act
with the Shifter will cost $220 in the US. One review on the Act said it was
a little notchy feeling and may not be real great for games like Cart, but
that was just one review. I ordered a Guillemot, but as far as the company
itself goes, Act Labs is a class act. Reviews on the Act Labs are
everywhere, for the Guillemot wheel check www.mgprs2.com .

Since you asked, it's moccasin, just for future reference.  And they are
pedals, not petals (or peddles).  Petals are on flowers.

I've a ForceRS and am very happy with it - however I can't give any
compraison with anything else! Don't have hte shitfer but as its
appeared (+ ForceRS) at Fry's I might consider it - if GPL were patched
to support it (full manual mode and not just up-down) then I'd probably
get it.

One negative and positive comment. After a week or so my ForceRS started
to act strangely and with increasing frequency would suddenly shift to
full left lock. I emailed Act tech support expecting to be told to
return the wheel to them however was pleasantly surprised when tech
support told me to unscrew cover and look inside and they'd send any
replacement parts I needed. Having done this (something I hadn't done
before in case it affected warranty) I soon discovered a faulty solder
joint on one of the pot contacts which was soon mended. So negative
point was a production fault but positive was a helpful attitude from
tech support that allowed me to fix a simple problem myself.

I agree.  ACT LABS has a first class bunch of guys to work with.   What
little contact I have had with their tech support has been prompt and
efficient.

Here Here.  Zenon (Tech Support) is great.  Always responds promptly.  He is
definitely an asset to the Act Labs organization.  Now if they can just get
Papy to implement RS Shifter support into GPL <g>

Hello,
The ACT LABS RS Shifter is really quite different from the Guillemot
one.  The ACT LABS RS Shifter permits free shifting (selection of any
gear at any time) as well as sequential shifting (via one of the
shifter plates).  The Guillemot shifter is strictly a sequential
shifter.
The belts inside of the ACT LABS Force RS are Kevlar reinforced and
can be notchy feeling when the wheel is brand new.  It usually only
takes about 10 hours of play time (which should pass VERY quickly) to
work the belts in.
Slot, thank you for the kind words.

Hello,
I actually race in my bare feet at home and with my boots at work
(don't think anyone here wants me to take off my boots).  At first, I
was skeptical about racing with my bare feet, but I haven't had any
problems.  The best thing about the ACT LABS pedal unit is that they
are HEAVY!

Hmmm.  Maybe slippers would be better.  Then again, I have calloused
and knarled  feet from 12 years of bare footed, arch crushing karate,
so maybe I am an exception.  Boots are a little better, but I really
don't mind using my bare feet on the ACT LABS peddal unit.  It does
have excellent *** grips as opposed to plastic parts.

Hello,
I would love to see full shifter support on GPL too.  Please e-mail
Papyrus and let them know how you feel.
Have you tried Rally Championship?  At the risk of sounding like a
broken record, that game is oodles of fun with ACT LABS full shifter
support.

David,

Yes, Zenon is a great person to deal with at ACT LABS concerning tech
support.  I think Papy should definitely do GPL for the RS Shifter.  I
wonder how much work is required to accomplish this?

Setting up the Act Labs Shifter within a game should be easy. All they'd
have to do is set up 8 regular buttons (in the case of GPL, less). The Act
Shifter is set up like 8 buttons. 7 forward speeds and 1 reverse. Just like
the buttons on a wheel or joystick. Some rally cars have 7 speeds. I haven't
played GPL (don't get mad) but I don't think those cars had more than 6
speeds forward. The sequential shifting in the game already has 2 buttons,
so maybe only 5 more are needed. Again, should be real easy for game
manufacturers to program in or add in.
