Er... how do I get GPL running under XP? Please?

Okay, I expect this has been answered somewher, but not in exactly
the way I want. To cut a long stoiry short, my PC blew up (almost
literally - we're talking puffs of smoke and "pfshhhh" noises here)
at 10pm on Xmas Day(!). I absolutely had to have a PC (for work :( )
by today, so it was a case of "go out to the shop and buy the first
PC that's even halfway decent". This is what I ended up with:

Intel P4-1.5 GHz
256 meg RAM (DDR, if that makes a difference)
a boring 40 gig HDD (NTFS file system)
GeForce2-MX 400 64 megs (OK, so it's not exactly bleeding edge, but
still...)
Some horrible onboard Inetl sound thingy I'm going to upgrade ASAP.
MSFF USB wheel (which works fine in Rally Trophy etc)
Windows XP

First I tried installing GPL from the CD-RW drive, but it whinged
about it not being a real CD (which it is), so I tried it in the DVD
drive instead. This was OK, except for a complaint about not being
able to install a .dll (win-something.dll).

When I tried to start it up, there was the opening screen, but I
could get no further - a complete lockup. Whinge!

Coudl some kind soul please tell me whether installing the various
Papy patches will fix this, or whether I'm going to need to employ
drastic measures? (I note via Google that someone could only get it
to run in a FAT partition, which does seem a bit excessive!)

I have also heard that it might not run if installed to the boot partition
on W2k/XP.
You should probably apply the D3D patch before you can expect anything.
I have installed it on my W2k NTFS second partition. I also got a message
about some file that would not install but it runs fine after all the
patches. It's on my second partition because I have a separate W2k system
for games and stuff, not because it wouldn't install to the first.
NFS PU proved this to be a very wise decision. :)

It seems to be borderline - apparently some people get it to run, and
some don't (whether the partition is FAT or NTFS doesn't seem to give a
consistent difference).

Taken as read.

Yeah, I thought this would be the thing. <Groan> - I hate partitioning
disks, even with Partition Magic etc. Still, if it's in the cause of
GPL...!

Running GPL here on Windows XP Pro, installed to the boot drive.  Before
opening GPL, I patched with the latest GPL12*.exe patch from
http://www.papy.com/ .  Then I applied the Direct3D patch from the same
site.  Rebooted, opened GPL and it is smooth as silk.  I've got the same
video card you have, too, but a 1 gig Thunderbird CPU with 512 PC133 memory
running on a clean NTFS install of XP.

I'm *nearly* there, but an odd problem now - all the gfx, sound etc is
fine, but the game runs far too fast (it also displays a framerate of
0.00fps whatever). I've tried installing twice from scratch, once with
the CPU speed patch and once without, and exactly the same happened
both times. Very odd. Oh well...

If it'll help, but try backing down your video acceleration a notch or two.
You can get to that by right-clicking the desktop, selecting Properties and
on the Settings tab select Advanced at the bottom.  Mine is NVIDIA's latest,
so it shows a Troubleshoot tab when the Hardware acceleration is located.
Don't know what card you're running, sorry.

Thanks for the advice - I'd have tried that next if it hadn't worked
this time - which it did! :-) The only thing I did differently was
install the discofix *after* the Direct3D patch - seems to have done
the trick :-)))

(The card is a GeForce 2 MX 400 64 megs, btw - not cutting-edge, but
*much* faster than my old Voodoo3.)

That's the exact card I'm running, David.  Having backed away from the
acceleration either.  Absolutely beautiful in Windows XP Pro.  8-)
