N2 - Rendition vs 3DFX

by Questio » Thu, 25 Dec 1997 04:00:00

I am about to upgrade my mobo/video, now that there is a 3dfx patch coming
for n2 (my main game) I am wondering if anyone can provide info on the
relative merits between each.  Which version is likely to be faster/better
detail/etc.  I have not seen either 3dfx or rendition versions live so don't
really know what to expect.  Thanks.

A lesson I learned a long time ago (and still don't follow) is not
to upgrade for something that doesn't exist yet. I upgraded my
computer for the NROS twice before it even became available.
This time I'm waiting to hear the reviews of the Verite 2x00 cards
with Rendition N2 and the 3dfx boards with the 3dfx N2 before
I make a decision ;-)

I have a gut feeling that the graphics in the 3Dfx version will be very similar
to the Rendition version (i.e., DAMN good), but the game will run significantly
faster.  I have a 3D Blaster (bought the day N2 was released) and a Monster 3D,
and that's typically how it breaks down. The Rendition chipset can produce a
nice image if it's done right (N2, Myth, etc), but it's never as fast as the
3Dfx.

BTW, I agree 100% with Mike's suggestion to never upgrade based on something
that hasn't been released yet.  But, I can also say an upgrade to a 3Dfx card is
about the safest investment you can make, even if you replace it with a Voodoo2
next year.  That chipset is about the most revolutionary thing to ever have hit
computer ***!

I started out with Rendition because at that time I didn't know there
was choices. I lucked out because my most played games were ICR2 and
NASCAR, both beautiful in Rendition. Then as I bought more games which
were 3DFX, I added a 3DFX daughter board. I have one game that can run
either, giving a direct comparison. That is Tomb Raider. Pluses for
Rendition: the best and most intense color. Minus: slow draws leaving an
occasional "hole " in the floor or ceiling. For 3DFX pluses: no problem
or errors with draw speed. Minuses: although detail is identical to
rendition, the color is pale by comparison to rendition. Results: I
usually choose rendition to play this game. Basically, they're both
good.
