Problems with GPL

by Mario Bauwen » Mon, 12 Aug 2002 22:56:26

Hi everybody,
Indy Car Racing II (Dos-version), was the first racegame that I ever bought.
Sinds then I have played a lot of racegames  but now I'm playing `Grand Prix
Legends for almost two years and I must say that this is certainly the best
racegame ever. The sound of the engines, the gameplay, the cars ... amazing!
I'm running Win-98SE and using Voodoo 5500-AGP. A few weeks ago, the game
didn't want to start anymore (no changes were made on my computer). Always
get the message: "Could not initialise the replay system, weekend
cancelled". I have tried everything what I now. Re-installing, changing
ini-files... without any succes. The game won't start anymore. There are a
lot of racegames on my computer and they all work fine but I love GPL so
much. Any help would be appreciated!
Kind regards Mario
PS: I live in Belgium, so ... sorry for my English...

This is usually related to system memory....did you add system memory, or did you change your
core.ini file in the replaymemoryoverride line?

Hello Biz,
You asked if I have added more system memory. Well indeed, I have. So, this
could be the reason why GPL doesn't want to start anymore? I had the
opportunity to buy extra memory for a very low price and that's the reason
why my computer has now 768 megabyte ram. I think that you are right, that's
it. I shall try it. By the way, is there a possible to change something so
that the game can run even with more memory than before? And . thanks for
your help!
Kind regards Mario ;-)

Your original post stated you hadn't changed anything, so you probably confused a lot of people who
would have had the answer for you.  Also, IIRC running more than 512MB in 98 is pretty much
pointless, unless you are planning on upgrading to NT/Win2K/XP in the near future.  Limit 98 to
512MB ram, and run some performance tests, then run them unlimited, I doubt you would see one bit of
difference in performance.

confused a lot of people who
future.  Limit 98 to
doubt you would see one bit of

I would even bet performance wise that using too much ram will slow your
system down.  Win98 does NOT improve with over 512 mb.  It CAN run at the
larger sizes but gets ZERO benefit, and probably a few extra kludge inducing
traits.
IF YOU HAVE A VERY SPECIFIC REASON to use so much ram, then go ahead, but
if you stick with win9x, then I have always recomended to just yank out the
extra stick.  (others here disagree tho)
Best options to use more than 512 mb of ram is to 'change'(notice not
upgrade) your OS to Win2k or one of the XP's.  (be prepared for MORE
compatibility issues there tho...)
and yes, there are several work-arounds that you can do to make GPL run
with extra ram.  I have never kept track of those items however,  a quick
search on the Google groups should turn up plenty as it's been discussed
here in Ras several times at great length.
