Before I jump on the bandwagon myself: Has anyone checked if the
flickering texture problems with Voodoo I based cards and GPL is fixed
by these new drivers?

Yes it is.

Glide 2.56, which is incorporated in the driver set works just
fine with GPL. In fact the very newest version (2.56.00.0456)
even gives you a slight frame rate improvement!
