Is it GPL or my computer (stutters)?

Hi!

GPL is stuttering (not very much just a little bit) for about 3 times
per second. I hardly see it when driving straight but in slow corners
it is quite annoying. Other games don't show this problem.

My Hardware:
FIC SD11
Athlon Slot A 600MHz
128 MB
Soundblaster 128 PCI CT4810 (Ensoniq Chip)
Voodoo3 3000

I have tried everything (latest drivers, bios settings, etc) but
nothing has helped.

Any suggestions?

Klaus

Windows ME, perhaps? See old posts.

I had two devices sharing an IRQ, that caused a similar stuttering.

Klaus, has it just started doing this or have you just installed it and this
is how it runs? If it's the latter, you probably just need to fiddle with
the graphics/sound options or lower resolution/color depth. You may just be
running into the limit of your machine. Are you running it in Glide? Do you
notice the stutter if you run it in software mode?

Some things to try.

May sure your VD3 isn't sharing an IRQ with another device.
May sure your SB128 isn't sharing an IRQ with another device.
If you run out of IRQ's, disable a com port or two to free one up (assuming
a PS/2 mouse).
ScanDisk your system.
Defrag your system.
Get the "End it All" utility and shut down stuff before starting GPL
including AntiVirus stuff.
Adjust your screen resolutions in GPL.

You have a very similar system to mine, and I also get minor stuttering in
corners, which is mostly caused by having installed the latest graphics
addons which add 3D wheels, etc.

There are a couple things you might do:

1) Install GSmiley's glide wrapper.
http://home.swbell.net/gmsmiley/
and use the MirrorUpdate = 2 option in the .ini file.  This gives 4fps more
at race starts.

2) In GPL graphics option page put mirrors at CarsOnly and turn off most of
the mirror options.  You should be able to leave trackside objects at full,
but put detail slider at about 1/2.

3) Overclock the voodoo3.  You'll want to remove the heatsink, scrape off
the heattape and replace with heatsink compound, then replace the heatsink
and mount a 486 fan.  I run at 180mhz after doing this instead of the
default 166mhz.

I run GPL at 1280x1024 after doing these things on a K7-700+voodoo3.

Hi,

thanks to all who are trying to help me. I am gathering my answers to
you in this message.

I have had this stutters since I installed GPL.

I have defragmented my harddrive, I have used scandisk now and there
is no IRQ conflict, every card has its own IRQ. It is not an obvious
performance problem because the problem appears with all textures off
and me alone on the track driving with arcade view, too. Maybe it is a
problem of timing between the hardware components.

I have tested different screen refresh rates now (72, 75, 85, 100Hz)
while I have been driving with no AI, 800x600 resolution and all
textures on and I have found a solution for me. Not as good as I would
wish but GPL runs better than before:

72 Hz: NO stutters (maybe because of GPL's maxed framerate of 36.x?)
        but bad tearing visible
75 Hz: Worst stutters, tearing visible (the refreshrate that I had
used for GPL before this test.)
85 Hz: Stutters less visible, tearing visible
100 Hz: Stutters almost not visible, tearing still visible (but
tearing effect is less visible at higher refreshrates).

I am using 100 Hz now because of the less visible tearing but is it
possible to avoid tearing in GPL? I enabled v-sync for Glide and for
D3D in the Display settings but although it works with other games GPL
seems to override this setting. Is this true or is there a way to
force GPL to let v-sync enabled?

yeah, i had that when i ran GPL above 800x600, a stuttering noticable when
going round corners.  i have a fast enough CPU at 900mhz, indeed the same
thing happened on my old k62-500.  it was cos my tnt2-m64 could only be
pushed so far, so i ran at 800x600.

got a GF2 GTS now though, so that`s hat problem solved!  :)

Haven't seen the previous posts, but is this stutter just in GPL or
other games too. Are you using a V5? If you are then turn off FSAA and
see if it goes away.

I have always heard bad shit about V-synch. No video guru myself, but what
happens when you try it with v-synch off.

I have a V3 3000 also (with P3-600) and I was also getting similar
stuttering, but I saw this at the Legends Central GPL forum (can't remeber
who wrote it, I just copy/pasted it to a text file...):

==================
These settings go into the GPL\core.ini file.

disable_modem = 1 ; Prevent GPL from looking for modem. Speeds up startup
and prevents problems. Disable unless you want to play by direct
modem-to-modem.

disable_network = 1 ; Disable network support. If you will never run GPL on
your local area network / home network this can be set to disabled.

disable_tcp_ip = 0 ; Disable TCP/IP support. To play over the internet on
VROC servers using TCP/IP this should not be disabled.

disable_ipx = 1 ; Disable IPX protocol? Most people do not use the IPX
protocol any longer and use TCP/IP, you should set this to disabled.
==================

The disable_modem option is supposed to be the one causing some stuttering,
and disabling it reduced the stuttering for me... BTW, 0 = false and 1 =
true...

I have a friend who has a AMD 1.33 w/ an Ultra that seems to do this in
certain games. Motocross Madness2, Micro***Train Sim., Leadfoot, and a few
more. He still hasnt gotten rid of it, and has tried everything and more in
this post. Ive used all of his games.. And on my P4 w/ same vid card etc. I
dont get any stuttering.  THe frustrating thing about it for my friend is
that all the fps meters read very high excellent frame rates.. but this
chugging every 2 secs. sucks. I feel bad for him and am always on the
lookout. Have not tried GPL on his machine but I'm very curious now. BTW
Nascar4 runs perfect on his system no stuttering.
