GPL & post-Detonator TNT stutters?

by Keit » Wed, 17 Feb 1999 04:00:00

Foolishly I tried the horrible Detonator drivers which are buggy with GPL, lots
of nv4ogl.dll problems. Even when it didn't GPF, there was a zero percent speed
gain. I ran the Detonator uninstall program, removed all references to nvidia
from the registry, deleted all nv* files from the Windows system directory.
Reinstalled the superior 0.48 reference drivers, and now GPL does not GPF.
However, it suffers from stutters, most noticeable a few seconds after the start
- start of a race or leaving pit lane in practice. What I mean by stutter is
that GPL freezes for a couple of seconds, then resumes normal execution. It
never did this before the Detonator fiasco, so much for the wonderful uninstall
program.

Anyone else have this problem, and any ideas for a fix? Any truth that the next
alpha release of buggy nvidia drivers is called the Imploder?

Hmmm, I tried the same drivers with GPL and didn't experience a problem.
They were, however, not as smooth as the
Voodoo2, so that's what I stick with. On other games, however, the Detonator
drivers through Direct3D(6.1) fly like shit off a shovel. Half Life, for
example,
now screams along compared to the Voodoo2 OpenGL.

Laurie,

From the benchmarks that I have seen, D3D in 1024*768 16bit color is faster,
everything else is the same or slower.

My Viper frame rate picked up big time (about 10) with 6.0. However, 6.1
took 2 back :(
