Check out this review and benchmarks:

Looks like maybe I should go back to the latest Hercules drivers. GPL was
working ok with those.

Yep, the "30% performance improvement" is hot air.  More like "30%
improvement in a couple of areas where our previous drivers were
pathologically bad.  But not GPL mirrors."

I had frequent crashes in GPL past 640x480 with the 0.48 reference
drivers.  The Detonator drivers fix them.  A few percent one way
or the other doesn't really matter; stability does.

Actually Dave, I had the opposite happen. I could do over 640X480 with the
Hercules drivers based on the .048, but with the Detonators I keep having a
GPF with the NV4OGL.DLL file.

I had no problems running GPL (OpenGL patch) with TNT Detonator drivers, but
my framerate in GPL dropped slightly (by about 1 fps at startline) compared
to the .048 drivers.

However, the graphics quality in MGPRS2 was considerably worse (I tried all
the Direct3D settings) with a lot of visual tearing.  Going back to the .048
drivers fixed the problem (setting 0 mipmap level and disabling mipmap
dithering).
