They don't require any support.

I don't have a cyrix processor now, but I did have a 6x86MX processor.
I never found any application in Linux or Windows that it wouldn't run.
The older Cyrix chips that don't support all the needed instructions
for gpl probably aren't fast enough to run it anyway.  I replaced my
Cyrix PR200+ 6x86MX processor with an AMD k6 233 for better floating
point performance and saw only a small increase in performance.

I don't check this newsgroup on a daily basis so this may have been beat
to death.  Is it really true that GPL won't work with a CYRIX
processor??  I can't believe they would do this.

Quoting from the readme:

"GPL uses a Pentium instruction which is not supported by the 6x86, and
as such GPL will not run on this CPU.  It will run on later Cyrix chips
such as the MX and MII, the AMD K5 and K6, in addition to all genuine
Intel Pentium chips."

Can't confirm it myself, Doug, but the readme.txt file
in GPL says that certain commands are used that are not
supported by the Cyrix 6x86, and GPL will not run on
that cpu.

Sorry, I was referring only to the older Cyrix compatibility-nightmare
chips.

thats because AMD fpu blows as well
the day i got the email back " gpl will require a Pentium " just after the
demo came out..
out went the 6x86-L PR200.. in went a 233MMX
and the difference was INCREDIBLE.. i though cyrix was decent.. not so Cyrix
fpu totally STINKS, AMD is only slightly better :)

at least the MX etc can run it

The FPU on AMD's K6 chips is okay.  It's non-pipelined (meaning that only
one FP instruction can run at a time), so it won't keep up with Intel's
FPUs under heavy FP load, but it's far better than Cyrix's.  If you look
on Alison Hine's GPL page, you'll see that she got pretty good performance
with a K6.

A K6 is acceptable for 3D ***, even though it's not quite the match of
a P2 except where 3DNow is well-supported.  No current Cyrix processor
should be placed within ten feet of a *** machine, though.

I can't confirm this (using AMD K6-II) but even if it runs - it
sucks with a Cyrix, that's for sure.

Also, man mailt sich...

Bullshit ! Cyrix sucks, that's for sure. But the AMD K6/K6-II kicks
ass - the FPU is not as good as a iP but compared to what you get for
the price the AMD is the only right choice, IMHO.

I didn't experienced ANY difficulties with my AMD K6-II/300, neither
with my old K6/200...in any game.

Also, man mailt sich...

very hard.... sorry
