I have a Cyrix 6x86 166+ processor, and GPL demo crashes when starting the
program. Has anyone been able to run it on a Cyrix processor?

I found the answer in http://gpl.gamestats.com . It will not run on a Cyrix
chip. So it seems like a good time to upgrade :-)

Uni des Saarlands \ and U.S. law. You have been warned.
Just a guess on my part, but since I saw one report of GPL working on a
CYRIX (a MX version) I imagine that it is only the older run of
processors that have the problem. That doesn't mean if you just bought a
166+ it would work, but rather the newer design that includes the MMX
instructions (a Cyrix with MX at the end of its name).
Can anyone confirm this for Cyrix owners? If it runs on your Cyrix,
which EXACT model are you using?
FWIW, It runs GREAT on my AMD K6 233 OC'd to 262.5 with a V1000 card.

with nascar2 i have to turn cpuid off.
runs fine after that.
The FPU wouldn't have anything to do with the game crashing. It would
just run slower than on an Intel or AMD chip.

This I doubt. I expect they just make the program bypass the cpu
detection routine.

I think I must be the only person in the world who has
GPL running on
a Cyrix Chip.
PR233MX, R534a M-Tech Motherboard, 64MB EDO, Matrox
Mystique w/2MB, MaxiGamer 3DFX Voodoo w/4MB, SB16 SCSI,
T-2 using CH pedals, hmm....guess that is all that is
relevent.
I have my old P200+ (non-MMX) here too. Maybe I will
put it in this weekend and see if it works still.
Runs fine, all detail on.
HTH, will post results if I get around to checking the
200+

Joystick reads can be made more exact by using the Pentium RDTSC
instruction, which is not supported on the early Cyrix chips.

I have said this before. I am running GPL demo on a
Cyrix PR233MX with
a MaxiGamer 3DFX card.
(I think without a 3DFX card GPL will "crawl" on any
xx86 computer made
at this time)
It runs great. I can see a slight slowdown when lots of
stuff is happening
at 800x600. By this I mean, if I am crashing on certain
places on the track.
In normal laps there is no slowdown whatsoever.
If I have time today (doubtfull) I am going to put a
Non-MX Cyrix chip in
and see if it runs.
Jim, the Cyrix *has* a FPU.
It also appears the joystick driver is fixed for the
Cyrix compared to the
one that is in N2. Don't know as I can't compare it to
an Intel, but it does
seem to work fine.
I don't know about anyone else...this is my experience.
It does not "crawl".
