Subject: RE: Overclocking a Cyrix 6x86 P166+
I don't have newsgroup access yet (use DejaNews to view) so could you
pass this on?
According to Cyrix website (http://www.racesimcentral.net/) and also the data Book
for the Cyrix (Which I have a copy of) the Cyrix processor core has the
multipliers of 2X and 3X. Trying to set the processor to 2.5X will not
work (the processor doesn't understand the setting and defaults to a 1
to 1 ratio 66MHz external to 66MHz internal).
This is why the processors are listed at:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Processor Performance Bus/Clock
Part No. Rating Speed
------------------------------------------------------------------------
6x86-P200+GP P200+ 75/150 MHz (2X)
6x86-P166+GP P166+ 66/133 MHz (2X)
6x86-P150+GP P150+ 60/120 MHz (2X)
6x86-P133+GP P133+ 55/110 MHz (2X)
6x86-P120+GP P120+ 50/100 MHz (2X)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Also with the P166+ and P200+ requiring a large heatsink/fan combination
compared to the P120-P150+, I don't recommend overclocking to 3X without
at least a Peltier designed specifically for the Cyrix (the Pentium
Peltiers will actually overheat and redirect some of it back onto the
chip, making more heat leading to meltdown city).
Check with ComputerNerd (http://www.racesimcentral.net/), they promise a
Peltier with alarm for the Cyrix 6x86 in August.
