GP2 and Cyrix 6x86

I am looking at upgrading my Pentium 100 to a Cyrix 6x86 P166+. How will
this processor affect the performance of GP2? I heard that the 6x86's
floating point speed is disappointing, will it actually slow down a
demanding sim such as GP2? Am I better off staying with Intel? I am
tempted by the price of the Cyrix chip, it costs 1/3 of the price of an
Intel P166.

From what I can tell so far, ICR2 does _not_ make extensive use of the
floating point unit at all. The only game that does, so far, is Quake.

Another thing you can do is wait for the AMD K6 with MMX instruction set to
come out. AMD is usually a little more complete in its emulation of Intel
than Cyrix is, though at this point they are behind in performance.

I have a cyrix 686 p166 and it works beautifly with
both nascar and GP2 with all the graphics on

I have a STB 3D video card and 512 PB cache

I could not be more pleased with this system

by the way it will run all your old windows programs
lightening fast too!!

especially GP2; I read somewhere here on this group that GP2 does not
use the floating point unit on the CPU. The floating point unit of the
Cyrix's is supposed to be the weak spot, but how many games/sims use the
FPU extensively? Obviously not GP2...
lack of knowledge...

Errm, no actually.

You're right when talking about games that use FP calculations but
GP2 doesn't. It runs like a train. A fast French or Japanese train, not
a British one obviously.

Get your facts right.
