GPL woes-Forced to move from Cyrix :)

Alright.  The ineveitable has finally happened.  Since I enjoy GP2 and have now
purchased GPL, the life expentancy of the original Cyrix P-166+ in my machine
is extremely short...

Without *** the horse too much, what recommendations can be made on a
Pentium chip, 3Dfx card and other peripheral necessities (at reasonable
expense) to get *up to speed* ?

I don't mind admitting that I am not all that versed on this stuff, so give me
the *plain english* versions (i.e.  feature=benefit).

Many thanks in advance.

Scott, you need a Pentium-II of some sort -- 300 or better -- and
if you're on a budget a 3dfx Banshee video card of some brand.
If you're not on a budget get a Riva TNT video card of some brand
_and_ a Voodoo 2 card of some brand.

The P-II will necessitate an ATX motherboard, which will
necessitate a new case (sorry ;-)

All your other stuff should be transferrable.  You're looking at
roughly $500 on the budget route.  Plus $3.95 for the Computer
Shopper <g>.

With my  16MB Voodoo Banshee card (99 here) I get the same frame rate at 1024x768
as I do in 640x480, and I only have a P166, also get the same frame rate with all
textures on as when they are off (around 25 fps) but I'm still going to buy a
400MHz brain for my PC 'cos I want it ALL!

My suggestion would be an Abit bh6 motherboard, Intel Celeron300A, 64meg ram.
You will also need a new case, and more ram won't play better but you get longer
replays. Take it to a local dealer and pay them $50 to assemble the system. Run it
at 300 for a while then up the bus speed in steps until you hit 100 which gives you
a 450cpu! This is easily done via a "softmenu" which you access during bootup and
can change easily anytime. This will run you under$500, check pricewatch.com for
the best deals. This combo is run by many GPL and longtime simdrivers.

Really?  I thought a P166 wouldn't have a CHANCE of running it.  The video card
makes more of a difference than I *thought*.

GP2 uses no 3d accelleration whatsoever... the only way to kick
up frame rate on it is brute CPU power.

Eldred, it's pretty awesome on my Celeron 450A.... I can
_finally_ turn everything on <g>.  I'd give my left arm (well,
maybe my left pinky finger) for some kind of IPX or TCP/IP
add-on.

Woohoo! I just got rid of my P166 and got a K6-2 350 -  GPL looks Awsome! 36fps
with all detail in 1024x768 in training... I can at last play GP2 with all detail
and it makes so much difference! Happy happy happy etc.

It is possible to play GP2 over a network, I think they've even done it over
the internet (though it still is 2 player ofcourse).
The utility used is GP2LAP, which has been developped for the Little Formula
Racing Series (LFRS, http://www.lfrs.com/ ,http://www.lfrs.com/gp2lap.html ).
It's main purpose is adding anti-cheating info to hotlap and race files, but
they've added network support to it (work in progress).
I haven't tried the network support myself, so I'm not really sure about the
results.
