GPL: Spa...secret to getting near a 3:20?

by Greg » Thu, 05 Jul 2001 09:28:26

Man I have d/l'd replays etc and seem right on the edge while hotlapping but
cannot get near a 3:20 at Spa...(picked that number as a goal)....looking
ahead of myself in GPLRank...it seems pretty easy to lots of people, and I
note the majority use the eagle..I assume for its BHP at high rpm's, but
that car is unstable to my style at that track.... anyone have ideas for
setups, techniques, tricks etc? I prefer the Lotus or Ferrari.........cmon
aliens reveal your secrets!
Thanks for any help

I would forget about the Ferrari at Spa -- too many high speed
stretches where the red car just doesn't have the power. Get in the
Lotus. Download Huttu's setup and use it. The Eagle seems to work
nicely for me as well.

Or don't listen to me at all because the best I have managed at Spa is
a 3:26.95 ;-)

It isn't.

Practice.

Drive the car you're comfortable with. If you look at GPLRank, the very
fastest can crack 3:20 in any car. Top speed is clearly not the secret.

Spa is all about speed in long straights. You must carry as much speed as
possible out of all corners, as they normally connect to long straights,
where u can make or lose seconds. Work on your driving line and try to make
exits as smooth as possible. Gearing is also important here. I'd recommend
Roland E setups.. they are much easier to drive fast then GHs.. and
ultimately I find them even faster if really pushed. And dont overdo it at
Masta- better brake earlier and start accelerating sooner to carry speed
down the following straight. If u dont believe me, watch your replay to
someone else's with Replay Analyser. Oh and one more thing.. practise :-)

As suggested get Greggor's setups and use the GH ones, not the GH2 aliens
only ones.  Use the Lotus and load up 5 laps.  Watch the original replay to
see where the surprise gear changes are (basically they go slower than you
do but are 5-6secs faster than you.)  I read somewhere that Spa is all about
exit speed so go in slow and fast out.  I used to be 3.25, loaded up GH
setup and did a 3.21.  This also applies to taming hte ring.

In this thread everyone keeps talking about getting that person or another
person's setups..... but where do I get them?

3:20s in both a Lotus or Eagle via F1 are 'attainable' & not overly hard
if you put some time in this track! Spa, is one 'fantastic track' no matter
what others say and if you put 40-60 laps just watch those times drop!
Watch replays of the aliens' :-) aka hotshoes as they will show you the
breaking points, lines, shifting etc. If I can do it anyone can!! :-)
Good Luck.. Thom_j.

I've seen several people(Rick Prydden springs to mind) lap Spa in a Ferrari in
the 3:15-3:18 range.  It's not the arrow, it's the Indian...<g>

Roland Ehnstr?m's and others' are at
http://www.mycgiserver.com/~gplhotlaps/

Huttu has his own site:

Jens Schumi's setups are nice, esp. for Spa and the Ring:

GPL: Spa...secret to getting near a 3:20?

Have you tried lots of practice?  Took me a lot of laps to get from 3:23 to
3:20.  I also dislike how the eagle (and lotus) feels at spa, even though
they're nice cars elsewhere, but they are the fastest.  I did my PB in the
eagle with default setup (3:20.31).

It was only about a week ago I did that PB so I can tell you which corner I
had to improve to get the 3:20, maybe you're having problem in the same
corners.

The main problem I had was a right hander two turns after stavelot.
Stavelot is the sweeping right with barriers both sides about 2/3rds of the
way through the lap.  It's followed by a slight left kink, and then theres a
bigger left kink which leads straight into the first of two right handers.
I detest these two right-handers, but anyway, I was taking the first one
*way* too slow.  Instead of braking, as you come round the left hand kink
and see the turn just mostly release the throttle and get the car way over
to the far left hand edge of the road, then pull the car hard across to the
inside at the apex and you'll find you can take the corner a lot faster.

The next corner I improved at was blanchimont.  After those two right hander
I just described theres a great massive straight, and then a kink to the
right.  The next corner, a 2nd or 3rd gear left hander is blanchimont.  You
don't need to brake half as much as you'd think here.  Brake less, take the
corner faster, and 'throw' the car over to the inside as you take the turn,
and again you'll be able to take the turn quicker.

Other bits to work on, get a good exit from Les Combes, and try not to lose
any more speed than is necessary in Masta.

Anyway, I'm going to edit my version of Spa and remove Malmedy ;)

Thanks for everyones help/advice...and the setup sites, I'll give them a
go....whats frustrating here is that most tracks I KNOW when I am not fast,
whereas with Spa I feel like I just had a killer lap and see the time and
say "DAYUM!! is that it?"
Thanks again for your time guys
