GPL Calibration Weirdness - Anyone seen this?

Hmmm, i get this too on my wheel and pedals, it always goes to the
left though. and always about 10-15 degrees. I'm using a Thrustmaster
Gamecard so i'm sure it's not the gameport. It seems to only occur in
gpl too? Does gpl have a bug?

GPL Calibration Weirdness - Anyone seen this?

I was wondering if anyone else had run into this one, or if it's my PERSONAL
slice of Heaven.

My wheel's center calibration will not stay put.  Oddly, it occurs between
menus and not while driving.  For instance;  I start GPL and do some training
laps, having calibrated the wheel after PC startup.  All is well so far.  After
doing some laps, I decide to race.  I go into race mode - without touching the
wheel or pedals.  Then, as soon as I'm in the car again, it pulls badly to one
side, forcing me to turn the wheel 20+ degrees to keep going straight, even
coasting on a straight(not a cold tire thing).  If I then go into the
calibration (direct input option) menu in the game, I can sometimes get it to
center again, but usually the center ends up significantly off after the normal
left-right routine.  If I quit the game and go back to the Windows game
controllers/properties box, the settings look fine.  But if I recalibrate there
and then restart the game, it sorts it out till the next occurrence.  Sometimes
the center moves right, others left.  Sometimes it happens going from practice
to race, others going back and forth to the setup menu (even without making any
changes), still others when reloading a saved race.  But it ALWAYS happens as
soon as you hit the driving mode from a previous screen, and never changes once
you're driving.  My wheel works fine in other games and looks ok with various
joystick utlities - no jitter, etc.

Any takers?

Thanks,

Steve B.

This happens to me too.  I dont have wheel but i have a joystick and it seems
to mis-calibrate itself for no reason.  I keep having to play with the axis
adjuster sliders on the stick to keep it straight.

I wish i knew what to do to fix it permanantly.

Try renaming controls.cfg to something else so gpl creates a fresh one. It
is in the gpl\players\yourname directory.

It's beginning to appear so.  I've been working on this with Tom at Logitech,
(super support, by the way) who wrote the drivers for my wheel, and the
problem's not there.  The values that the driver is delivering to DirectInput
are as intended, perfect even, on initial in-game calibration, and unless you
go through the GPL menus, the problem doesn't surface.  The numerical error,
when it occurs,  is only about 3-4%, but as sensitive as GPL is, you can't
ignore it.  If you start the game in one mode and don't change anything, no
problem.  Go to fiddling, and you're likely to get a crooked wheel.  Highly
annoying.

I have the problem in germany. When starting to practice there I have
calibrated the wheel. All works fine and at the end on this long
straight I see that I have to steer mostly about 10 to the right to
drive straight up. So the calibration changes during racing on the
track. I use the Thrustmaster Formula 1 and thought that it would be a
problem of the wheel but Im "happy" to hear that it seems to be not the
wheel... :o)

Has anyone finish a lap in germany without some donuts or crashes? ;o)?

Yes it is a bug in GPL Ian...
I have no problems with my wheel shifting off center with every other
sim i own, but GPL does it all the time.
I have deleted the cfg files plenty of times, re-installed the game a
few times, made up and deleted new driver profiles,  tried generic &
direct, you name it, i have tried it.
I wish a patch could be released to fix this, it is damm annoying
driving along with your steering wheel about 10 degrees of center to
the left.
I am seriously thinking about adding a centering trim pot to my
steering wheel's base. Sheesh! i shouldn't have to do that to get
straight ahead steering.
Cheers,
Ron

Ian,

    I'm using a T2 without the gamecard,and I haven't had any problems with
calibrating my wheel in gpl.

I have a homemade wheel/pedal system. Up to this point I have been using
inexpensive pots in it.  I noticed when those pots started to fail I'd have
problems calibrating and playing GPL.  Other racing games would work and
calibrate fine.  New pots always solved the problem.  I'm not sure if bad pots
are your problem but it is a possibility.  Good luck.
