GPL car set up question

by Alain Genouill » Wed, 14 Apr 1999 04:00:00

I finally found a set up that suits my Lotus. However when I brake hard
or downshift fast the car systematically takes a sharp right. Any hint
on waht I did wrong ?

Check the camber settings... are they asymetrical?? That could be
why.... also check the brake bias. (and re-calibrating your controller
can't hurt either)

I am fairly sure Dave is right: it's asymmetrical camber that usually causes
this. You don't necessarily have to set them identical (in fact it's the
only setting which can be adjusted independently with "asymmetrical setups 2
off) but getting them a click or so closer can help.
BUT you can adjust to it with practice. And it can help turn-in if you use
it right: e.g coming fast into the Parabolica I brake hard, shift down, push
the wheel very slightly left to catch the swerve, ease up on that, coming
gradually off the brakes, then let the thing take itself round to the right.
Gently on with the power (I now use a low third gear) and on your way to a
consistent 1m29.00 laptime!

Braking hard should not cause you to swerve off sharply in any direction but
downshifting fast can cause this if your lower gears are set fairly
high.Your travelling to fast for that particular gear.Try setting them to a
lower ratio.

I used to have the same symptom.  My problem was from the Camber.

The way I understand it. (and this may not be the way it works..)
While I'm braking, one tires camber is set to be flush against the track
and the other is at an angle.  The one that's flush will have more track to
grab then the other.  So, one tire wants to pull the car to the right and
the other don't care where it goes.

If this occurs only at one turn but all the other turns feel perfect, I
would just learn to live with the way it works at that one turn.  However,
if it's at most or all the other turns, I'd re-do the entire chassis setup.

Well, aside from obvious tire things (like toe-out  or asymetrical
spring/pressure settings), a big culprit behind this sort of thing can
be ramp angle (in the "gear-ratio" screen of setup). Letting off the
gas can make you turn sharply if the second number of the ramp angle
is too high (or is it too low?!?). Experiment with different settings.
