Help with GPL modems???

by schwab » Thu, 04 Feb 1999 04:00:00

Hi all,

Ok, let me start by saying I've read Alison's FAQs. But...

Does anyone play online SUCESSFULLY with a serial (external)
modem? I have a crappy internal Win modem now... I know what bad things
it does, so I won't use it for GPL, and that's why I haven't been on
VROC yet.

But I do also have a 33.6 USR Sportster external... will this be
adequate for GPL if "buffed out" using all of Alison's modem settings??
(BTW, the rest of my system is a 233 MMX oc'ed to 261, 8MB Thriller, 96
MB RAM... I don't have any problems with turning down most if not all
detail to get playability).

Thanks in advance,
Dave

Any decent 33.6 non-winmodem (controlerless) type modem should work fine.
In fact, it wasn't until I disabled 56k and V.90 on a 56k modem that I got
reliable connections to GPL hosts.

GPL only requires something like 23k of bandwidth on the client side.

Yes, it should do quite well.  I have used a 28.8 modem and great online
connections.

As long as your computer is configured right, you have a good ISP, and pings to the
host are good, then everything works perfectly (most of the time). It all depends on the
host being set up right more than anything else in most cases.

Help with GPL modems???

by Bria » Sat, 06 Feb 1999 04:00:00

My brother has a U.S. Robotics 56K V.90 Voice INT PnP modem (ISA) - can
anyone tell me what a good setting is for GPL should be and how to set it?

Is this done with a modem initialization string in the Advanced Connection
Settings of the modem properties of the Dial-up Networking connection?

Thanks in advance,
Brian

Yes and yes.  (Not to be glib, but it's a number of settings.)  See
some of the help files on the VROC site
(http://gpl.gamestats.com/vroc/) for modem and DUN tuning tips.
