Destruction Derby2: joystick problems?

[Pentium 100Mhz, Matrox Millennium 2Mb [BIOS v2.2], Sound blaster
clone]

Well, I eagerly rushed to Egghead last night to pick up my copy of DD2
PC-CD.  I got home, and the (somewhat skimpy) manual explained the
installation procedure as "insert CD, and the autoexec will install
automatically".  It then gave alternate instructions for the windows
install.  Ugh, I thought-- I have a millennium, and the DirectX/Win95
performance is nothing like the DOS performance.  I installed it in
win95, and sure enough it was REAL chunky and hard to play.  And the
joypad, even though calibrated in the windows control panel, didn't
center properly when playing so that it would pull to one side all the
time.  Pretty dismal.

So, as I was about to package it back up to return, I decided to
explore the CD.  To my relief, there was a "DOS" directory!  It had a
DOS version, which I installed.  MUCH better performance.

BUT!  The joypad won't turn left!  Actually, when I turn left, it
seems to "wiggle" between right and left, having the result of just
sending my car roughly straight ahead, slowly.  And yes, I calibrated
it on the calibration screen.  I tried both my Gravis pad and a
generic 2-button pad I have.  I've never had problems with my joypads
before (except in NHL97, but that's an exceptionally buggy app).

Has anyone else experienced this?

I would really like to at least *finish* a race!  Although, it was
quite fun*** around under that first big jump on the first
track-- I'd lurk right past the top of the hill and speed up the wrong
way when the faster cars are approaching.  SLAM-- I estimate that on
one occasion my car was sent up into the air about 20 storeys...  Hey,
whaddya expect when I can steer in only one direction?

Well, I haven't played much I guess... But I'd say I still like the
first one better!

Maybe once I get into DD2 more, I might like it.  It just seems too
choppy, especially when in one of the bowls-- spinning around while 20
feet in the air can be a little disorienting.

Now, I've heard they're going to do a version for the 3D cards.  THAT
would be pretty amazing-- might make me go out and pick up a Righteous
3D card.

BTW, if I start out with my MS Sidewinder 3d joystick, calibrate it,
REMOVE it, then plug in my gamepad, it steers correctly.  Sigh.

DD2 is total ***in my opinion - if you liked DD1, you probably won't
like DD2.  My biggest complaint:  How can you hit the oponents cars if
you can't catch them!

I picked up DD2 yesterday and have the smae joysick problems. The game
runs great in hi-res mode in Win95 with my new reactor 3D card on an AMD
PR133 system with 16mb -70 FPM ram.

system and Vquake is amazing!

Has anyone informed psygnosis (sp?) of the joystick problem?

Agreed,  It runs so slow and is so unreponsive to the controls as to
be unplayable (with my P133, 64Mram, Matrox Millenium, 512L2 system.)
I can't believe they actually tried this thing out before they shipped
it.

Also the simple install, simply screwed up on my system and crapped
60M unto my harddrive including opening and closing avi's.  Then it
couldn't find the CD so it wouldn't run.

Forget about this one kiddo's
