Can anyone explain to me why I can't copy the GPL cd-rom? Even using a 700
MB disk does not seem to solve the problem!

Any suggestions or am I doing something completely wrong?

You have European version! It's some kind of a copy protection. I had to buy
a new cd-rom drive just to install the game! Papy/Sierra doesn't trust
Europeans.

i hope you are not copying the game to give to friends who are yet to try
the gpl experience- if so it is actions like this that are to blame for
papys semingles droping of the game, they have not made as much money on the
game and making copys further shrinks their revenue, this will make them
less inclined to make a gpl2.

The thing you're doing that is completely wrong is trying to copy a
commercial CD-ROM. Despite all the excuses given, I think that if
CD-ROMs are stored and handled properly there is NO reason for an
average consumer to make 'safety copies'.

Funny you mention copy protection on CD. I just read (somewhere) Microsoft
will begin using some sort of copy protection on all of there products very
soon. This protection will not copy to another CD and is neccesary to run
the proggie. Personally, I'm so sick of blatant copyright infrigment by the
"warez" crowd that I really don't even mind! Take a trip over to the NG
3DFX.products.voodoobanshee to see what I mean. Some punk named commOdog is
always bragging about his theft of not only S/W but music, pictures, etc
etc. His daddy needs to take his 'puter away! For some reason this guy
reminds me of the term "Trenchcoat Mafia". The inmates are in charge, OH
NOOO!

Don't copy GPL. Support Papy and purchase GPL.

Why jump to that conclusion? He may want a backup or to avoid having
to find the CD every time he wants to play thanks to the stupid copy
protection foisted upon the Europeans.

Apart from ***games my two pet hates are a) games that _force_ you
to install into their "Company_name" directory (I hate even suggesting
it, but forcing you is unforgivable) and b) copy protection on
CDs that force you to find the game and put it in the drive in order
to play - European GPL has BOTH of these.

Given that and the chance the CD could become damaged and fail to read
with all the additional handling (especially with today's faster, more
sensitive readers) I don't see why everyone is getting all righteous
and finger-pointing.

As for the original poster, I'd suggest getting a hold of the US "EXE"
file and burning a CD using that - it'll work then.

As a backup copy - honestly, please don't start flaming me - I copied the
European version of my GPL with no trouble at all. I used Yamaha 4416S and
NERO 4.0.3 overburning onto a standard 74min CDR.

Why is everyone assuming this guy is burning illegal copies of the game? You
all say to support Papy and all that stuff but that doesn't mean he isn't. I
make backup copies of all my favorite games and store them in a safe place
just because I _always_ misplace a CD for a decent amount of time.

Its not illegal or wrong to copy a CD you paid for. Its illegal and wrong
to use that CD to give to someone else. I had a situation where I had a CD
get scratched and I couldnt reload the software. It took me 7 weeks to get
it replaced!

There is NOTHING wrong with having a copy of software if you have paid for
it. Distributing it is another story.
