Well, I thought I was immune to this issue, but I guess not...
When I first got N4, I had no problems installing it on my machine. My
machine had:
Kenwood 72x TrueX ZEN CD-ROM Drive.
Pioneer DVD-113 DVD Drive.
HP 9200 Series CDRW Writer.
If anyone was to have trouble, I expected it to be me :)
But, I didn't...
However, that has changed.
I bought a new Hercules Game Theater Soundcard/Rack system and installed it.
It worked fine, but I had a few problems related to not being able to get
the old Soundblaster live drivers & software completely removed. There is
no real removal utility or entry in Add/Remove programs.
Since it's been a while, I decided to go ahead and format c: /q and
reinstall from scratch. I didn't want to use my images as they were set up
for the old software. I usually create new one's after hardware changes
anyway.
So, I reinstalled Windows 98 and Windows 2000 (it's a dual boot), did all
the usual updates, etc.. and was ready to go.
I installed N4 next. When I launched it, I had the same symptoms that have
been reported here time and time again. Black screens with no activity,
forever.
Crap.
I removed the DVD drive and put it in my server. I've been meaning to do
that anyway since it's easier to watch movies on that monitor while using
the computer anyway.
I reinstalled N4 and tried again. No joy :(
I then removed the CDRW drive and moved it to the server also.
I then reinstalled N4 and tried again. Success!!!
I am now in TOTAL agreement with those pissed at Sierra over this
non-productive, useless copy protection scheme of thiers (though I was
pretty much in agreement before anyway).
