>OK, Ed, I have a great idea... You or someone from NASCAR must get an

>great, turning on ESPN2 and seeing some computer cars going at it at

Oh yeah, that's just what I want to watch on TV, 50 laps under yellow in a
virtual Talladega race. <g>

Complete with commentary from Glen Jarrett on the pit stops and chatting up
the crew chiefs about race strategy. Buddy Baker reminiscing about how it
was in the good old days of NASCAR 1.0. They could even have one of those
little Track Tips segments on setting up cars.

Actually, I've been in a few league races that would look pretty good if
they were rendered with full detail at a decent frame rate. I can't imagine
people watching them on TV, though. Good for a few highlight films, but not
a full race start to finish. I guess someday, when we run out of fossil
fuel, this might be how races are actually held.

Well, before Jurassic Park, people thought computer graphics weren't
good enough to fool people.  They do now.

I bet when Bill France, Sr. started running cars in the sand in
Daytona, people never would have dreamed that 91 million people would
watch it on TV some day.  They do now.

I can assure you that when Papyrus wrote "Indianapois 500, The
Simulation", we (actually, they... that was wat before my time here)
never thought that a computer game -- any computer game -- would ever
grow into a fully sanctioned professional sport.  It did.

I'm not saying that ESPN or anyone else is going to jump into
broadcasting NRL races right away.  All I'm saying is that NRL will
grow into something that people might/will want to watch.  And the
beauty of it is, it's something that they can both watch & participate
in -- at the professional level.  There's not another professional
sport in the world like it.

Stay tuned! :-)

The biggest problem with broadcasting a sim race on TV is the quality of
the graphics. Even in SVGA, the detail lacks that extra realism needed for
high level exposure. This could be handled by sending the raw data to a
much faster computer dedicated to rendering high quality images for
broadcast. The computer would only need to be in a "view only" mode and
if powerful enough, could deliver a high level of realism with a small
production staff. The equipment is currently available.

Production costs would be much less than a real race so it should be easy
to sell commercial time at a decent price. I would expect computer related
companies to jump at this type of exposure.

I can imagine one day seeing NRL races during WC rain delays. Throw in a
few Cup drivers and it could be fun to watch while the track dries.

I wouldn't quit your day job, but yes, you will have an opportunity to
make money in the NRL.  There will be sponsored races in the NRL &
prizes.  The plan is to make it like the other divisions as it grows &
becomes worth it.

Yeah, but it's going to be the best in the world, or at least in the
country, racing for dollars.  Not just anyone that can handle a small
entrance fee.

You think they wreck a lot now?  Throw a couple bucks on the line and
fergetabouddit.  No matter how well policed, with real awards for
doing well you're going to see leaders dumped at an alarming rate and
hard feelings brought to a level yet unseen.

If ya wanted my opinion, I'd say not to change anything that Hawaii is
now, aside from improvements in reliability and latency and
(obviously) cheaper access than we have now.  It's wildly popular with
those spending boku bucks to dial it up and races for nothing.

However, NASCAR? steps in officially and suddenly everything on Hawaii
becomes about 100% more complicated and 'official' and the rulebook
doubles in size.  Frankly, I'm not surprised one bit.

And if anyone from NASCAR? just happens to be listening in, here's a
little advice:  Before ya put any Hawaii/NRL races on television,
check out some of your real racing series that deserve it more.
Especially the series you're neglecting (Featherlite Modifieds).

This is a *SERIOUS* concern.  Folks out there will do what it takes to
get the *reward*.  Right now, since reward == respect from the drivers
you race each day, it pays to be clean.  But if the NRL has you racing
different drivers each race, and pays to WIN -- well, a whole different
set of motivational factors.

As if what is on television has anything to do with "deserving".  In case
you didn't notice, IRL has been on television. <g>

I am sure that NRL will get mention (certainly, nobody will actually watch
NRL races on TV!  That would be funny) in order to promote a highly
lucrative business.  NRL makes money from participation, not spectators.

My .02 anyways.
