You've both got this backwards. Basic media sensationalism is what
drives this portion of the economy. Sponsorship money is not
gratuitious; it pays back as real advertising. The more their car wins,
the more air time the sponsors get. For an example of how important this
is to them, you only have to watch de Ferrano's interview in the
winner's circle this past weekend. After winning the Cleveland Grand
Prix, he stood in front of the cameras wearing his Pennzoil driving suit
and Goodyear baseball cap. In the opening few seconds, you can see the
Pennzoil guy in the background behind him, timidly waving somebody
off-camera to replace the Goodyear cap with the Pennzoil cap he held in
his hand. Apparently getting no takers, he walked around the crowd
surrounding de Ferrano, reaches over the camera, timidly removes the
Goodyear cap, and tries to replace it with the Pennzoil. Even before the
newly proffered cap touches his head, somebody else forcefully grabs the
new hat, and *jams* the Goodyear cap back on Gil's head. If Gil was at
all flustered by the commotion, he didn't show it. One would presume
this is all part of the game they play.
I would bet real money that viewership for NASCAR and IndyCar events
have skyrocketed in the past two or three years. The reason for this (if
there really is a difference) is IndyCar Racing and NASCAR Racing by
Papyrus. I'm among the new converts, and arrange my weekend plans so I
can watch some of the racing events on Sundays (sick, yes?). A larger
audience means a larger pay-off for advertising.
NRL is not charity for NASCAR, Papyrus, Sierra, TV networks, or
potential sponsors. Where I'm concerned, it's a win-win situation; they
get what they want, and we get something we never had before. Nobody
*deserves* their time in the limelight. They have to take it.
Featherlite Modifieds notwithstanding, that is.
