: IMO one of the very best driving games for the PSX is Gran Tourismo,
: although GT2 is due soon and is supposed to be even better. If you want
: something a bit more arcadey then you may like to try the latest NFS which
: can be good fun with a few friends around :)

:> I've just bought a Platstation for my young cousin for Christmas, any
:> comments on the best driving title? I've bought Driver, which is a lot of
:> fun and I know he'll enjoy. Something with multiplayer would be nice.
:>
:>
The only downer with Gran Tourismo is that you can't roll the cars or
damage them. Something to do with the licence granted I believe.
Happy racing.!

TOCA 2,
CMR,
GT
and, F1 '97.
ALL of these are now to be found in your bargin-bin (apart from TOCA 2
maybe)
Frankly, playing these games, with my mates, with a few bevies, is FAR
better fun than spinning every 100 yards in GPL....(my opinion, and not
that of the chronic GPL Faithfull)

The guy wanted racing games that are suitable for a kid, and 2 player
option a bonus.
All 4 games fit this, and are now fairly cheap.
The chance to slate GPL was just too good to miss.
Don't get me wrong, I have GPL, and it gets maybe 15 minutes of a wet
sunday afternoon every other week....because straight afterwards, I'll
play TOCA 2, and RC2K and have a laugh...it's about entertaining
oneself...
When playing a GAME (they're all GAMES, not Arcade / Sim ) I don't want
to have to spend hour on hour learning how to drive. I've got better
things to do with my life. (Like slating GPL in Newsgroups for one...so
don't say that the only better thing I've got to do is post shit in
newsgroups...we are ALL guilty of that)
So, I'm now going to do some WORK...and thisevening, if I've got a spare
few minutes, I may do a couple of stages on RC2K, maybe have a few
bevies, then get home, and play F1 '97 or CMR on my PSX with my
housemates...

Never for me the lowered banner, never the last endeavour!
(Damon Hill - 16th June 1999)
The best multiplayer for children, is probably "Crash Team Racing"
("Crash" stands for "Crash Bandicoot", the rascally hero of the "Crash
Bandicoot" series of adventure games), if someone can layout the
price of four extra controllers sometime. (3 more controllers,
plus a four-player adaptor which costs about the same as a controller).
With this equipment, CTR allows 4-player racing on a single screen.
Gran Turismo is great, and Gran Turismo 2 is coming out soon. If you
want to save some money, I'd say the "Greatest Hits" version of Gran
Turismo is likely to be complex enough for a young cousin, although the
"this is old stuff" peer pressure may cause him to ignore the game.
Also, you need to either pass license tests, cheat with a Game Shark,
or obtain an appropriate memory card download[*] in order to play most
of the game. That's still true for Gran Turismo 2, but it sounds like
there is *so* much to Gran Turismo 2 that you could spend the rest of
your life playing it and not touch it all... And I've been playing
Gran Turismo 1 too much for almost exactly a year, and still haven't
exhaused it.
The multiplayer racing in Gran Turismo 1 did have a few problems,
actually. It clearly seemed to have been added as an afterthought.
But when I spent a week with my nephews (and niece) of varying ages,
two player Gran Turismo was adequately fun.

Besides that, you really do get two (2) two games in one! It comes
with two disks, one Arcade and one Simulation, and these could be
used on different PlayStations at the same time.
Adrian.
[*]I'm reasonably unco-ordinated, with relatively poor reactions, and
a creature of habit who learns old things thoroughly and new things
slowly, but I passed 48/50 GT2 license tests last night (this morning),
meaning I've got 4 of 5 possible licenses already, and none of the
tests use the old courses (excepting the drag race ones).
"I Lost My Skill, on Apricot Hill..."
But for children, with GT1 you might be best to give them a
card with a license or two so they can practise to gain the skills
to pass the license tests in the first place. Repetition of the
tests can be boring and not optimally productive. I gave both
sets of nephews a couple of game cards when I gave them the game.
The license tests in GT2 do seem a lot easier.
Adrian.
