way back in 1995, or whenever it was
that I first played GP2
I had no interest in racing
but the computer sim was so impressive
that I had to keep on playing
when I started messing around with the setups
and seeing what they did
and started breaking and shifting without help,
I saw what the sport was all about.
since then I have been a devouted watcher of F1
I assume most people came the other way round
that is, you got into the sims because you liked the real thing.
GP2 was a real education
have racing sims had the same affect on anyone else,
especialy Americans
GPL is the biggie amongst Sims but Cart/Indy is the
US prefered 'open wheeler' so have any Americans been
converted from Indy/Cart to F1
after playing GP2 or GPL or whatever

Happy Hols to all

Same here, I actually got into F1 after playing Formaula One Grand Prix
on the Amiga in 1990. I must admit I have dropped off thid year. But I
never showed the slightest interest until I played the game. Same goes
for Touring cars and Toca. I guess I'm a really shallow and sad person
really.

Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year to all on the group!

I was into F1 and CART racing long before I even knew what Windows or PC
meant. Infact, ICR2 and GP2 were the sole reasons I ever bought a PC in the
first place. Before my PC days, I had a Sega Saturn console and I was
playing every racing game I could get my hands on. I can't even remember
most of the titles. I know one of them was Need for Speed.

Anyway, I wasn't getting enough. The arcade action of those games just
wasn't cutting it. I kept seeing these ads in my Racer magazines for ICR2
and GP2 and they were pulling me in like a magnet, but I didn't have a PC
and I didn't have much experience with them either. I had to play those sims
so I finally went out in one big shopping spree and bought my first PC, a
monitor, a Thrustmaster T2, ICR2, GP2 and the rest is history. That first PC
was the only PC that I ever bought off the rack. I've since built 4
computers and I'm just as big of a PC nut as I am a racing nut now.

I'm not as much into F1 now as I was back in the days of  Senna, Prost,
Mansell and Piquet. But I still watch on TV every Sunday. CART has been and
still is #1 with me though.

Got ya beat pal!  I've always been a car nut and especially an auto racing
wonk.  I don't care if its F1, Cart or whatever...  I got into computing for
the internet *** and racing sims are just an extra.  How many folks do you
think downloaded Dr. Laura's *** pictures compared to GPL purchases?  Think
online NASCAR racing is big?  Here's whats BIG:  Pamela Anderson's umm, ...
home movies.  However, thanks to re-skinning sim racing cars, I now have the
graphics chops to transpose Bill, Hillary and Monica's head into any ***
antic to be found on the 'net!  'Scuse me while I crawl back under my rock, my
joystick is calling...

First step, watching, second step simulations, next step would be racing a
real car or motorcycle. How many sim racers have done that?

For myself I raced in a handful of motorcycle enduro and MX events years
ago, and still have a 86' Honda XR-600R in the garage. My goal is to compete
(make that finish) the Mauna Kea 200 enduro before I reach 50.

Auto racing in Hawaii is currently limited to drag racing, which never did
it for me. What other forms of entry level organized racing exist, and can
be done on annual budget of - let's say $6,000 (not including the race car)?

Played GP1 on Atari, then GP2 on Pc and GPL, started karting with Uni last
year, now win a lot, went to Donington Park, got 90% then 95% in Formula
Vauxhalls and getting my license in the summer, all down to good old sim
racing. Hope to be in F1 in about 5 years......!!!!
Yeah, I wish...

What's Uni? What's 90% and 95% in Formula Vauxhalls? Is it winning
frequency?

/Chrille, miss the redundancy ;o)

I raced a motorcycle once, back in '92 when I had a ZX-7.  Of
course, that was way before I got into sim racing.  That didn't
happen until I was half way through college and had a computer.
A friend got a pirated copy (I know, I know, I'm going to H-E-
double-hockey-sticks) of GP2 from somewhere (this was before
most of my friends knew what the internet was in '94) and we all used
to sit around playing GP2 on his computer in his dorm room.
He ended up getting pretty annoyed with me when I'd show up at
his room at 9am on Saturday mornings asking to play!

Hi Alan; Is there a local chapter of the SCCA that holds autocrosses (Solo
2) on Hawaii? That's a terrific route for entry level racing. Sure, you're
racing against the clock, not directly against your competitors, but it's
still a great way to learn about how a car handles on the limit, picking out
racing lines, etc, etc. You just miss racing's strategic side - working on
someone to pass or avoid being passed. If you choose to stay in Stock class,
it's real cheap. A good set of R-compound tires gets you most of the way.
