Argh! I can't decide! (another TNT2/Voodoo3 message)

by Steve Ow » Thu, 25 Mar 1999 04:00:00

Ok, I've read the reviews, and I've read the banter on both sides.
Frankly, I'm not worried about a few more FPS.  I'm more interested in
compatibility with the games I play.

80% of my time I play Nascar 2 (1999 Edition) and Grand Prix Legends.
I do expect to play Everquest somewhat, and my roomate likes to play
Quake I sometimes.  I also spend a bit of time playing MS Flight
Simulator and MS Combat Flight Simulator.  For games, that's pretty
close to it.

Right now, I'm leaning towards the Voodoo3 3000 since it gives me
maximum compatibility with the games that I play.  At only $150, it
replaces my 2D (currently a matrox millennium) and gives me decent 3D
(currently a Diamond Monster I).  If TNT2 takes off and Voodoo tanks,
I'll get whatever is the latest and greatest in 12-18 months.  No
biggie.

So, what to do what to do...?  TNT2 or Voodoo3?

Thanks,
Steve

Keep your Voodoo 2 and wait unless the V3/TNT2 is out for two or three month.
Then ask again.
Your Voodoo 2 board will give you sufficient performance for
compatibility. So you can look in the middle of the year for a TNT2 and use
both cards in your system. This would be IMHO the best solution.

TNT2 outperforms the Voodoo3 in all areas except one, current game
support. I am personally upgrading my TNT to TNT2 and leaving my Voodoo2
SLI alone. I Believe in the future ALL new releases will be optimised for
the TNT as well as the Voodoo range.

How can you make such an unequivocable statement at this point in time since
a TnT 2 simply doesn't exist on the market!!  Try rephrasing it to read, "A
cursory glimpse at early previews certainly shows the TnT 2 outperforming
the V3 in all games except multitextured titles, but all of this might
change by the time these boards hit the market."

if you're not too fussed about upgrading in a year or twos time, grab
the Voodoo3-3000. The thing that Voodoo has over evrything else is
games support.
TNT2 is what TNT SHOULD have been but they couldnt get it to work in
time. Thats why the TNT wasnt the Voodoo2 killer they touted it to be.
Its a goo dcard dont get me wrong, I am installing one myself in a
while to go with my Voodoo2 (and replace my ***intel card!).

Voodoo3 does everything you need it to do, and with FULL
compatibility.

Thanks, but you misread.  I have a Voodoo I (ONE) board... so that's
why I'm looking to upgrade now.  If I had a Voodoo 2, you're right...
I'd probably be keeping it and maybe only looking to upgrade my 2D
card.

What I have isaid that is "unequivocable"? The fact that all games in future
will be optimised for both cards? Already the leading industry forcasters
predict the TNT2 to take a huge chunk of the future 3d accelerator market. So
why wouldn't any savy games producer optimise code for both the Voodoo3 and
TNT2?

s for the performance differences. The cards seen by my myself and the more
creditable than me hardware reviewers, such as Sharky, Tom etc, are pre release
but fairly close to the final product. Certainly both NVIDA and 3dfx/STB have
yet to optimise their drivers but the basic hardware is finalised. Unless 3dfx
perform some type of Houdini act with the drivers to overcome the fundamental
hardware differences then how do you propose they are suddenly going to start
outperfoming the TNT2?  As for cursory glimpses......try many hours of testing
and reading of technical documents and other reviews by other more technically
competent experts in the field. Both cards are an improvment but only one can be
the better choice and for most people myself and many others reckon that will be
the TNT2. No bias, just facts.

Compatiblity, whats with all the compatibility bullshit anyway. EVERY single
game (3D) released today has at least Direct3D/OpenGL Support which makes
compatibility an absolute non-issue.  Anyone who claims otherwise is
spinning you-know-what.  Buy the better quality card for godsake. TNT2 is
your answer.

Care to tell me how to make GPL work on my Viper 550 then ? NOT
compatible.

Please.  We have enough threads already listing all of the games that
have crappy D3D/OpenGL implementations and good Glide ones...

So I guess compatibility is then only a patch or two away, a statement
that speaks for itself. Anyway, without the luxury of the Internet,
compatibility would still be at the top of everyones list. Not to mention
that the creators of Unreal would have probably have gone bankrupt a long
time ago, without the cushion that Internet patches provide.

You must have never experienced how much time one can spend being frustrated
trying to get crappy drivers to work!
The TNT2 is a little bit faster than the Voodoo3. Fine. But I will be
playing games while you wait for the next patch. I had the Riva 128 and the
drivers ALWAYS sucked. A friend has the TNT and has had the same problem.
Some things you must learn on your own.

Well Nvidia better hurry, because S3 has gobbled just about all of the OEM
