Back on line and it works. I reinstalled Win 98, DirectX 6.1, Diamond
TNT drivers and GPL. The frame rate isn't great (about 20fps) but the
video quality is stunning.

So it must have been a screwy Directx install

Diamond Viper 550 TNT does work !
